Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) are working behind the scenes to repeal one of the most controversial taxes in ObamaCare, multiple sources tell The Hill.
Reid and Pelosi have been talking since the spring with President Obama about repealing the âCadillac taxâ on employer healthcare benefits, a senior Democratic aide confirmed on Friday.
âPoint is, they both want to get this done,â the Democratic aide said.
Opponents of the 40 percent excise tax on high-cost health plans believe 2015 is their last, best chance to get the provision repealed before presidential politics grind the legislative process to a halt.
With just two months left in the year, sources say the most ideal option for Democrats is attaching repeal to the package known as âtax extenders.â The cost of the extenders bill is typically not offset, making it an attractive vehicle for ending one of ObamaCareâs biggest revenue generators.
Reid and Pelosi have not settled on a plan and are leaving their options open, the aide said, adding that the work on ending the tax could carry over into next year.
âIt is clearly a commitment for the Democratic leadership,â AFL-CIO lobbyist Tom Leibfried said in an interview in his downtown office Friday. âWe think thereâs a real chance to get this done, as big a lift as this is.â
The Democratic leaders are seeking to end the tax at a time when all of the partyâs major presidential candidates â including front-runner Hillary Clinton â have pledged to repeal the tax before it goes into effect in 2018.

Repeal it all or not at all.
The Democrats wrote it and passed it. Let their union slush funds live with it.
Screw ‘em.
Keep it in place.
The Cadillac Tax is costing some union support.
Because they still run the Senate and the House.
I guess Pelosi finally got around to finding out what was in the law she and Reid rammed through Congress.
This should be used as leverage, but the repubs will somehow muck it up.
Do not give in on anything. As I understand, RINO’s in Congress have already agreed to many such “fixes.”
NO - repeal it all
Republicans should use this and see what else the Democrats will agree to in exchange for this.
Why do they want to repeal a TAX THEY VOTED FOR?
I guess dumb ass Nancy forget to read the bill before she passed it although I think she knew what was in all along.
These people are evil.
Traitor Roberts says the People wanted this.
Reid and Pelosi worried that Blue States are about to turn RED
So who were the people pushing to put the “Cadillac” tax on health benefits in place to begin with?
Oh, I forgot, nobody ever read the legislation. It was written in a back room by a bunch of ideologues and “consultants” and just pulled out and slapped on the table, in front of the Democrat caucus, with the warning, “Take it or else. We’ll find out what’s in it after it gets passed.”
If any part of the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010” is opened up for review and possible repeal, it ALL gets opened up. Otherwise keep it intact.
Doing an appendectomy on a decomposing corpse is not a viable option, or much of a purpose for any legislative body.
Bingo!
Ted Cruz says it with perfect eloquence.
Repeal Obamacare! Every word!!!
Dear Ms. Pelosi, perhaps you should have read the bill before you passed it and discovered this tax that is going to hurt all of your loyal union backers. But then, union folks are brainwashed to suffer whatever you think is good for them, even if it isn’t.
Is there a downside for the rest of us unwashed that don’t have these plans? If the tax is hooked to a finite benefit amount instead of a percentage of coverage we might all end up getting there sooner or later, like AMT.
Here’s a funny thought, dims, why don’t we elect a conservative president and then repeal the whole damn thing!?!?
Watch the traitors-to-their-voters repubs surrender. What pathetic losers.
I remember the Democrat hype on this focused on multi-millionaire CEOs having extremely expensive insurance plans, with a few voices in the wilderness saying that the primary victims of the Cadillac tax would be union workers.
As the great philosopher Nelson Muntz has said: "Ha! Ha!"
