U.S. regulators reject push for 'Do Not Track' Internet rules

U.S. regulators rejected an effort on Friday to force Google, Facebook and other popular web sites to honor "Do Not Track" requests from users, in a setback for digital privacy advocates.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) dismissed a petition that would have required Internet giants to let consumers opt out of having their online activity tracked.

The decision secured a win for Silicon Valley businesses that rely on monetizing reams of personal data.

The FCC said it “has been unequivocal in declaring that it has no intent to regulate edge providers,” or companies that provide content and services over the Internet.

Digital privacy advocates argue consumers should be allowed to submit “Do Not Track” requests to tell a website not to collect information about their online browsing habits.

We're so used to content being "free" that we forget the costs associated with putting it out there for us.

I'm very much on the side of the privacy advocates. But I also recognize that there has to be some way for these companies to make a buck on all the "Free" stuff they make available.

I expect there's eventually a compromise, that if the viewer wants content for "free", then they get tracked, but if they are willing to cough up a fee, then no tracking and no ads.

That model is already in play of course, I'm just saying that if privacy and Do-Not-Track gain a footing, I expect that model to spread.

I’ve heard of Ghostery but not the others. Are they relatively new features?

Those other programs have been around for a while — a year or so.

You might trying googling ‘reviews of {program/extension}’ to see what others say about them’

I guess it wouldn’t be a good idea to install of them. Just one of them will work. I’ve used Ghostery in the past but didn’t like how it worked, but I wondered about trying Disconnect.

I run all 4. So far, I have not noticed any conflicts.

Each sort of does a different thing.
