"Dalton Trumbo was a socialist, but he loved being rich."

There's a lot of that going around.

Capitalism for me, socialism for the rest of you.

Bernie Sanders is a socialist. Trumbo was a Stalinist ...
Mere semantics. The CPSU had its birthplace in the Social Democratic Labor Party of Russia, which split into the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks. The chief tenet of Stalinism was so-called “socialism in one country”.

I remember an interview with actor Robert Mitchum, who said: “ Back in the 1940’s, it was kinda hard to sympathize with screenwriters who made 50 or 60,000 a year, and then sneak out at night to attend a Communist Party meeting.”

Trumbo followed the usual course of Stalinist stooges - he hated the Nazis until the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact at which point he became an ‘isolationist’ against any interventions in Europe. But when Germany invaded Russia he became a fervent warhawk. The US had to go save the Motherland of Socialism, doncha see?

He was absolute scum and, in a just, sane world, would have ended his days on a gallows.

Trumbo *was* a Stalinist stooge, but he did write some great screenplays for movies many of us enjoy even today.

Trumbo came up with the line “I AM SPARTACUS!” in his screenplay. it i s not in the Howard Fast novel SPARTACUS.

I myself prefer “The Gladiators” by Arthur Koestler for a Spartacus novel.

Trumbo also wrote the screenplay for LONELY ARE THE BRAVE in which a military officer Dusalius sends in a military helicopter to hunt down Kirk Douglas in violation of the Posse Comitatus act.

When I was a kid with a brand-new driver’s license I picked up a hitch-hiker who said he was Dalton Trumbo’s nephew. His stories rang true enough to convince me he was.

Said he wanted to be a writer too and was thumbing his way across the U.S. looking for material. Working class stories, that kind of thing.

He asked if I knew where he might find a job-—I told him, Hell man, there’s an oil boom going on (late 70s) and you can get hired tomorrow if you want.

He asked what the oil patch was like and I told him. Turned out he didn’t want to work that hard.

Dalton Trumbo wrote an anti-war book during the era of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. When Hitler (y'sh"v!) stabbed his partner in the back and the line changed, Trumbo immediately changed his tune. He then made it a point to turn over the names and addresses of any remaining anti-war people who wrote to ask him for a copy of his book.

It's too bad Buchanan is an anti-Semite. Does he blame the "Zionists" for Trumbo?

The fact that this, about someone who loved Stalin and Nazis, can still be made today as a heroic big budget Oscar generator, is so damn sad about our people. Those who flock to this, maybe my own son(s) who love to go to movies, won’t automatically know the truth about blacklisting. They won’t know that in this film, the good guys are the bad.

I’ll be telling my kids this tonight. I got to experience this a bit myself, how great the Soviet propaganda machine was, in the 1980s in Europe. A whole generation of young Germans, dressed like hippies, thinking they were counter culture and cool, were WHOLLY INDOCTRINATED with all the Red toys, pamphlets, and products they would buy at their special stores, set up all cool with music, etc, like head shops in the USA, but selling not drug paraphernalia but communist everything. I could tell it was all done by the Soviets, written in German from East Germany, but my friends pooh poohed me. Stupid American who prays to a flag. They were drinking straight from the breast of Moscow, and they were supposedly smart Med students. I was proven right on all counts after the fall of the Wall. Propaganda, dressed in cool clothing, works.

I’m sad because I thought we all knew the truth, that the heroism of the Hollywood types who refused to testify is BS. I’m sad because today there is blacklisting in Hollywood, against conservatives. None of this film’s future audience gets the truth. They will shake their heads at the WRONG PEOPLE after seeing this film.

How does Hollywood keep getting away with this, and why can’t we get ANY TRUTH into public education?

I remember a story on the actor Sterling Hayden.
He actually joined the Communist Party and on the same day bought a yacht. He said he loved money but for time was a Communist.

The question is how do people like Hayden and Trumbo reconcile the two opposites? It’s like they joined as it seemed the Socially Acceptable thing to do but were not really committed since they, and so many others like them, so enjoyed the “Perks” of the capitalist system. Which for the most part makes them total Hypocrites.

Why is it all the ‘brilliant’ ones in the entertainment industry just seem to have SOMETHING wrong with them?

They are screaming liberals, outright commies, fags, lesbians, drug addicts.....and yet, some of the most brilliant writers, the funniest comedians, the most talented singers, and the best actors....all at the same time.

For what it's worth, Trumbo's name Romanizes nicely as "Daltonius Trumbo". He'd have made a great Greek slave teaching rhetoric.

This conversation, is always about socialist fascism. All the varied adjectives, are to disguise a/the “man as god,” philosophy.
Islam is the basis for all socialist fascism. The friggin’ commies did not come-up with the idea of a system of no private property by direct Gov’t control. The Islamic State is the birth mother of this evil.
