GHWB criticizes Cheney/Rumsfeld
Fox News ^ | 11-5-2015 | Brett Bair

"Destiny And Power: The American Odyssey Of George Herbert Walker Bush,"

"he just became very hard-line and very different from the Dick Cheney I knew" Bush told Meacham. "The reaction [to 9/11], what to do about the Middle East. Just iron-ass. His seeming knuckling under to the real hard-charging guys who want to fight about everything, use force to get our way in the Middle East ..."

The 41st president suggested that Cheney may have been pushed toward a harder line by his wife and daughter, Liz and Lynne.

"We smile about it, we laugh about it," Cheney told Fox News. "Same with my daughter, with Liz. It's his view, perhaps, of what happened, but my family was not conspiring to somehow turn me into a tougher, more hardnosed individual. I got there all by myself."

Regarding the former president's "iron-ass" remark,"I took it as a mark of pride," he says. "The attack on 9/11 was worse than Pearl Harbor, in terms of the number people killed, and the amount of damage done. I think a lot of people believed then, and still believe to this day that I was aggressive in defending, in carrying out what I thought were the right policies."

The elder Bush is even harder on Rumsfeld, saying, "I don't like what he did, and I think it hurt the President" -- his son, that is. "I've never been that close to him anyway. There's a lack of humility, a lack of seeing what the other guy thinks. He's more kick ass and take names, take numbers. I think he paid a price for that. Rumsfeld was an arrogant fellow ..."

Rumsfeld has declined to comment on the book.

While Bush still believes in traditional marriage, he claims to have "mellowed" on same-sex marriage.

Jeb is his daddy's boy. Older people seem to get less wise sometimes. Cheney's comments are gracious. But we all knew GHWB was always a RINO. Always talking about his good friends on the Democrat side. I wonder how CIA fared under his leadership.

Does not the latter disprove the former?

This family is poison to America. They turn the other cheek until their heads are spinning when Obama or some liberal attacks them, or makes ugly, nasty comments about them. But then they make nasty comments about conservatives or the more conservative members of their cabinets. I remember the blow up when Bush Sr.’s staff went around trashing Ronald Reagan after he won. Bush’s staff was so eager to trash Reagan to the press that Bush himself had to address the issue in a press conference. Its a shame that he has this ugly side because in a lot of ways, he is a decent, honorable man.

There was a time in GW I where he had the option to go all the way to Baghdad - the road and way was pretty open. He could have put Hussein out of business right then. At the urging and “concern” of Colin Powell the Democrat, he chickened out. [Recall the Highway of Death outside Kuwait where some F-15s tore up some Iraqis]. Democrat Colin felt the world would see America’s intrusion as ‘bad’.....effing concern troll Democrat.

So. Years later Cheney and Rumsfeld were left with the aftermath of that decision and he backbites them?

Regarding Dick Cheney, I spoke with him a few times between 2001 and 2003 and I can honestly say that, despite his reputation and the fact that he is a bit of a hardass ()which I actually respect), I genuinely liked the guy.

I have no delusion that my opinion carries weight. I do not know these people and can only speak from what I saw, heard and reasoned.

So...I liked Rumsfeld but not Cheney. I was fooled by W.

I don’t like any of the Cheney’s. I blame them for the rise of the gaystapo.

I have ALWAYS wondered why the Bushs were such buddies with Clintons. Regardless of humanitarian work. Enough for me never to vote for another Bush and I am sorry so sorry that baby Jeb was put in office in Texas.

I don’t agree with Cheney on same sex marriage but it doesn’t blind me from his excellent intellect, love of country and his willingness to effin destroy our enemies.

You are so right there. Hate Cheney and Rumsfeld, love the Clinton’s and Obamas. A blue blood sickness of magnificent proportion.

41 is no dummy. He has good points and bad points. All of the Bushes seem to suffer from that liberal disease of being overly emotional. “Kinder Gentler” “Uniter not divider” “Compassionate Conservative” and Jeb who is working on his own version of it.

Regardless of that flaw (and I fault 41 for not being pro Reagan early on), I still say 43 erred in picking Cheney. I wanted him to pick J.C. Watts. My how things would have played out differently if Republicans had offered a black VP. Instead the Dems offered a half black pres and race relations have been set back decades.

As for terrorism, everyone thinks they can rewrite things now, viewing it from hindsight. At the time the country was actually remarkably united around the first portion of our military response. Division started with the Iraq involvement. But even then people were proud of the shock and awe thing. Iraqis were celebrating. Things were pretty good and moving forward until Obama withdrew troops and set everything back decades.

Conclusion: Obama is not a progressive but a regressive. Cheney was a self server who brought the who country pro-homo stuff just to accommodate his own wayward child. On foreign affairs, I suspect his motives may have been corrupted. I have no proof other than evidence of a corrupt character. He was smart enough and well connected enough to get away with it.

The Buses are too emotional, squishy, feely....

Rumsfeld has declined to comment on the book.

IIRC, Rumsfeld's memoirs were gracious towards GHWB. Rumsfeld often was a no-holds barred leader. He gave his side of the story in his memoirs, and it was a great read. The sections of his childrens' drug abuse pulled no punches, and were heart rending.

Maybe. But are you basing your opinion on trust or on facts? What do we really know? Republicans trusted him because he was one of ours. We need to stop doing that.
