In the alliance between communism and Islam each side has always intended to betray the other.

Communists are hedonists and hedonists aren't good fighters. They also don't produce much progeny so they can't produce a competitive sized army over time. They need Muslims to provide bodies, and to try to give credence to the notion that Religion in general is a dangerous illness in need of stamping out.

The story is that the church needed pastors in the East, so her father went East with his wife.

You could say that by not protesting or being persecuted, they accepted the system, but the cost of protesting was very high in those days.
