On climate change, Pope Francis isn't listening to the world's poor
NY Post ^ | September 23, 2015 | Bjorn Lomborg

Posted on 11/04/2015 12:40:42 PM PST by Mrs. Don-o

The global elite has little idea what afflicts the poor, says Pope Francis. He's right ---but that observation sometimes applies to him, too.

In his US visit, the pope is already creating headlines about the urgent need to respond to climate change. Invoking the need to "protect the vulnerable in our world," he calls for an end to humanity’s reliance on fossil fuels.

But do the world’s poor believe that carbon cuts are a top priority? Since March 2013, the United Nations has sought citizens’ ranking of 16 policy priorities. More than 8 million people have participated, with nearly 3 million living in the least developed nations.

In fact, an education is the top priority for the world’s most disadvantaged, followed by better health care, better job opportunities, an honest and responsive government and affordable, nutritious food.

Both for the entire world and amongst the worst-off, climate comes 16th out of 16, after 15 other priorities. It’s not even a close race.

[big huge snip]

Look at malaria. If we don’t tackle it, millions will die — but a lot of other problems become worse, too. Lack of malaria treatment disrupts development, as sick children get fewer nutrients and their schooling suffers. Malaria-endemic societies have lower economic growth rates, so millions will be left in poverty longer.

What’s more, climate-change policies such as the cuts on fossil fuels are a terribly inefficient way to help malaria victims. The Kyoto Protocol’s carbon cuts could save 1,400 malaria deaths for about $180 billion a year.

By contrast, just $500 million spent on direct anti-malaria policies could save 300,000 lives. Each time climate policies can save one person from malaria, smart malaria policies can save more than 77,000 people.

This is true for a wide range of issues.

That cuts the statistical margin of error to almost zero!

Pope Francis is just another bobble head repeating what others tell him.

Not one ounce original thinking.

Communists never care about the poor. They just use them as their excuse to gain and wield power.

I would have taken the dude seriously if he had sailed up the Potomac River in a sailing ship and dropped anchor next to the Lincoln Memorial on his trip here to the U.S. Instead — like leftist hacks who claim to care so much about the environment — he comes across as a complete phony by flying all over the world in a jet.

Good article, except for the leading two sentences of the last paragraph.
No, Climate Change [since quotation marks/apostrophes currently are not working, I will just say: insert air quotes here] is not a real problem.
Unless he meant real problem to apply to those politicians who use this made up problem as cudgel to beat up people and raise taxes.

“Both for the entire world and amongst the worst-off, climate comes 16th out of 16, after 15 other priorities.”

For me, concern about Climate Change is about 10 to the 16,000th power. It's very near the bottom of my list.

Right after worrying that the monsters that I drew when I was three years old are going to come to life and trample me riding a unicorn that came from the plant Z1999.00031415926535 driving a Prius and an Escalade at the same time. While this is going on Jack Benny plays his violin and Rochester sings “Glory Halajulah” as he drives a paper Maxwell.

The chances that man made Climate Change is real are that same as the above scenario.

Lomborg is not a climate scientist, he is an economist. He has chosen to take an agnostic approach to the quesiton of whether AGW is happenig, and concentrate on what are the most economically sensible ways to deal with any kind of climate phenomena (including regular, run-of-the-mill typhoons and so forth.)

He does a careful cost-benefit approach and never comes down on the side of "Let's find a 10-trillion-dollar way to stop that typhoon." He always points out that it would be better to --- for instance --- have better early-warning systems to evacuate people in coastal areas, and tweak the building and zoning codes so as to minimize property damage.

Sensible stuff like that.

RE: 11

I agree, his cost-benefit analysis was spot on.
Maybe he was just tossing a bone to the Gaia crowd with his acknowledgment of AGW, but He didn't throw the bone.

Unfortunately, at the end, he endorses the Global Warming Hoax. He just doesn’t (unlike the Pope) want to kill a billion people in the next decade to “fix” it.

The Pope is a sock-puppet of the world’s totalitarians—the E.U., the NWO, the bankers.

I read recently somebody in Rome quoted as saying, “If the conclave were held today, Bergoglio wouldn’t get ten votes.”

I HOPE that’s true!

Saying the Pope "wants" to kill a billion people in the next decade is unjust because false.

You have been given a good talent, Arthur, and know how to express yourself trenchantly, persuasively and accurately when you choose to do so.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

The Pope advocates taxes, regulations, etc., that will kill a billion people in ten years.

He who wills the means wills the end.

...If he knew the end was the death of billions. But he doesn't know that.

BTW, it sounds as if you're engaging in worst-case apocalyptic speculation. This kind of stuff does not convince, and tends to undercut your persuasiveness, especially when the "doom" diagnosis is put forward without sufficient evidence.

Mind you, I am against the whole AGW scam--- I'd personally like to boost surface temperatures a healthy 2 C. and increase CO2 four-fold to an attractively greenish 1600 ppm.

Your remark about the Pop was slanderous hyperbole, especially in its attribution of malicious intent. I'm with Lomborg. Whether or not AGW exists, we can't in fact, stop it (not that I'd want to anyway), so in the meantime, let's stop malaria. Which is something we can do.

...If he knew the end was the death of billions. But he doesn't know that.

His not knowing that is culpable, but he has a lifelong pattern of constructing a bubble, exiling those who don't agree with him to the boonies.

He COULD notice that virtually every politician, party, organization, etc., pushing the AGW hoax is pro-abortion, and that among pro-life politicians, parties, organizations, etc., believers in the AGW hoax are practically non-existent. If he were a pro-lifer (according to my definition), that is the first thing he would notice.

I don't know this for a fact, but I've read that AGW skepics are found almost exclusively in the Anglosphere plus, perhaps, Russia. The pro-lifers (according to your definition and mine) in the Hispano-sphere and across Europe, Africa and elsewhere, would not necessarily have imbibed that same healthy skepticism.
