Gov. Terry McAuliffeâs prospects of retaking control of the Virginia Senate dimmed Tuesday night as Republicans won a Richmond district that Democrats called key to their plan for flipping the upper chamber.
With 99 percent of precincts reporting, Glen Sturtevant, a Richmond school board member, defeated Democrat Dan Gecker, a Chesterfield County supervisor in the race to replace Sen. John C. Watkins (Powhatan), who is retiring.
âWell itâs a shame. We did the best we could,â Senate Minority Leader Richard L. Saslaw (D-Fairfax) said.
Tuesdayâs election results will ultimately determine McAuliffe (D) has any legislative leverage or political momentum heading into 2016...

John Bel Edwards supports abortion in cases of “the health of the mother”.

“Edwin Edwards, a Democrat, says he’ll vote for John Bel Edwards. They’re distantly related, he said, but he also likes that John Bel Edwards was a critic of Gov. Bobby Jindal long before many others.”
I see no reason not to believe him and every reason not to believe John Bel saying “no relation”. In any case John Bel’s daddy Frank was a key Edwin Edwards crony and that’s even more damning than blood relation.
Too bad the Libertarian Candidate running for Governor in VA helped to hand Terry McAwful the Governorship.
Well considering that health of the mother has been a decision on keeping the baby since the 1800’s I guess it is nothing serious. He is totally against abortion which I support as my first issue and most important issue to the United States. Bitter wanted his girlfriend to have an abortion and even offered to pay but she ended up having a miscarriage. You really want that in charge? Yikes.
Prior to 1990, that district elected a Republican.
Donald Trump also did his part by donating $25,000 to McAuliffe's campaign. There are plenty of reasons I won't support Trump, but that single one is enough to guarantee I will not.
The District Moran represented is primarily the cities of Alexandria and Arlington, not Fairfax. In throwing together the Congressional District Moran used to represent, they threw in the most liberal parts of Fairfax (including Reston and the part(s) of Alexandria that are Fairfax County not City of Alexandria). There are 3 Congressional Districts in different parts of Fairfax. (and the district has shifted over time, certainly since the time I speak of when there were only two Congressional Districts).
