If FBI moves to 9mm, what happens to the .40 cal Pistols?

Demilled Smith & Wesson Revolver

The Smith & Wesson revolver shown above was paid for by U.S. taxpayers.  It was a finely crafted piece of machinery that served its country of origin well.  It is legal to own in all 50 states, by nearly all citizens.  But the Clinton administration chose to pay additional tax dollars to reduce it to this sad pile of scrap.  The destruction likely occurred at Anniston Army Depot.

The General Services Administration (GSA) has issued a solicitation from the FBI for a unrestricted number of 9mm pistols worth up to 85 million dollars.  From GSA:

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is issuing an unrestricted solicitation for various 9mm luger pistols and all associated replacement parts with the intent of making single award of a fixed price indefinite-delivery indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract. In accordance with FAR 2.101, Multi-Agency Contracts, this solicitation includes a provision authorizing other law enforcement agencies to utilize the contract on a case-by-case basis with prior approval. The anticipated period of performance consists of one (1) base year and nine (9) possible additional one-year options.

It is worth noting that the offers are to be received in late January of 2016, so that receipt of the pistols will be either after, or at the very tail end of the Obama administration.

Didn’t the Feds contract for an outlandish amount of .40 caliber ammunition within the last couple years? What will they do with that?

When ammunition becomes obsolete for the Feds, they contract to have it destroyed...

The article says “Luger pistols” not “pistols chambered for the 9mm Luger”.

I can read.

Modern 9mm loads are more than adequate stoppers.
I’ve shot thousands of rounds of 40 and 9. For whatever reason (and most experienced shooters agree with me), it’s harder for me to stay on target with a 40 than a 9.

I blame the extremely high PSI of the 40 along with the modern polymer framed guns. I’ve also owned several 10mm guns and can stay on target better with that cartridge than a 40 FWIW.

Combat is the ultimate arbiter and in my experience, 9mm wounds, .45 kills.

I strongly suspect that your experience involves military ball ammunition.

Same stupid reason the US Army decided to ditch a perfectly good 1911 platform and go for an Italian-made pricey POS that fits the hands of the pussies that were complaining.

That one has always puzzled me. If you can't get a good grasp on a 1911, there's no way in hell you're getting a good grasp on that fat-assed Beretta.

That pitcha right there is worth a thousand words. Or, as others have suggested, they could be surplussed out to ISIS and/or the cartels.

Put up for sale to law-abiding Americans? Never, not with 0 or any Democrat in office.

From yesterday's thread,

Self Defense Ammo Ballistic Tests

Modern ammunition + shot placement = success. That doesn't mean I want to replace my 10mm with a.380, but it does mean that you can no longer dismiss any caliber out of hand.

How many people have you shot with a 9mm using the latest bullets in the last couple of years? .45 with FMJ is indisputably better than 9mm with FMJ but they aren’t using FMJ anymore, even the Army is thinking about going away from it. I have seen a study which catalogued thousands of actual shootings and the .45 did a little bit better than 9mm but probably not enough to make a real difference. In my reading of it, I came away with the idea that pistols generally wound and rifles generally kill.

“It depends on what the situation is. If you’re trying to shoot through a windshield then a 9mm probably isn’t best. If you need to punch through a heavy leather jacket then a .45 JHP may not perform well.”

Tests of penetration and expansion of modern bullets in these calibers through clothing and windshields into ballistic gelatin show they perform similarly. Buy them all and carry the one you are most confident in as you will probably do better with it.

The most common 9mm round today is the 9mm Parabellum, also called 9mm Luger, that was used in German Luger semis.

"9mm is cheaper. The decision was probably made on those grounds."

Further proof that those who risk their lives in the defense of their country are worth less than Kleenex in the eyes of their leaders.

If you can get a head shot, even .32 ACP will do the trick. If you have a determined, even crazed enemy coming at you, the .45 works very well.

I haven't shot anyone in nearly 49 years but the five I personally saw shot with a .45 all died. Conversely, the WWII infantryman I knew years ago was hit five times with 9mm from an MP-40 and he lived till he was 80.

Yes. And unless we plan to abrogate the Hague Convention, we will continue to use ball ammunition.

the Hague Convention

Yes, the military needs a new round. They should compare .45ACP +P to 10mm +P in objective testing against realistic targets, and let the best cartridge win.

The FBI, however, is not subject to the Hague Convention. Neither am I. Being open to technological advances in bullet design might lead us to different conclusions from the Convention-bound military.

Those are FMJ rounds. That is not what the FBI is talking about using. Hitting what you are shooting at helps. There are a lot of studies out where they look at real shootings using the latest ammunition. Generally, the .45 does a bit better but not much better than 9mm. They .357 magnum does better than both, carry that instead if you want.

The US is not a signatory to it and apparently are thinking about it.
