Russiaâs Putin Says Global Warming Is âA Fraudâ
Michael Bastasch10:56 AM 10/29/2015
Russian President Vladimir Putin believes global warming is a âfraudâ â a plot to keep Russia from using its vast oil and natural gas reserves.
Putin believes âthere is no global warming, that this is a fraud to restrain the industrial development of several countries, including Russia,â Stanislav Belkovsky, a political analyst and Putin critic, told The New York Times.
âThat is why this subject is not topical for the majority of the Russian mass media and society in general,â Belkovsky said.
Putin has been casting doubt on man-made global warming since the early 2000s, according to the Times. In 2003, Putin told an international climate conference warming would allow Russians to âspend less on fur coats,â adding that âagricultural specialists say our grain production will increase, and thank God for that.â
Putinâs comments likely came after his staff âdid very, very extensive work trying to understand all sides of the climate debate,â according to Andrey Illarionov, Putinâs former senior economic adviser, whoâs now a senior fellow at the libertarian Cato Institute.
âWe found that, while climate change does exist, it is cyclical, and the anthropogenic role is very limited,â Illarionov said. âIt became clear that the climate is a complicated system and that, so far, the evidence presented for the need to âfightâ global warming was rather unfounded.â
The New York Times published an article on how the Russian mediaâs skepticism of global warming is being driven by Putinâs laissez faire attitude on the issue. The Times bashed the Russian autocrat for offering âonly vague and modest pledges of emissions cuts ahead of Decemberâs U.N. climate summit in Paris.â
Russiaâs largely state-run media has spent little to no time covering global warming despite huge fires raging across Siberia. Instead of blaming the fires on warming, Russian news outlets tended to focus on âlocals who routinely but carelessly burn off tall grasses every year, and the sometimes incompetent crews struggling to put the fires out.â
Such reasoning wasnât good enough for the Times, which argued that âRussian media continue to pay little attention to an issue that animates so much of the world.â
Russian media leaders argue itâs not just the tone being set by Putin, but a weak economy and unemployment woes are a top concern of the Russian public â they donât seem to care much about the weather.
âIt is difficult to spend editorial resources on things that are now a low priority in the midst of the economic crisis,â Galina Timchenko, who runs a news site, told the Times. âUnfortunately climate change is not very interesting to the public.â
Low oil prices have hampered Russiaâs economic growth, and spurred the Putin administration to take more action abroad, fomenting conflict in Ukraine and supporting the Assad regime in Syria. But at home, Russians are feeling the bite of cheap oil and western sanctions.

Global Warming on Free Republic here, here and here
.
Can we nominate Putin for president?
.
Russian media take climate cue from skeptical Putin
We already had one illegible foreigner be president - why not another?
.
We’ve already had numerous Trumpet trolls weigh in; why not another?
.
(Freepers: Not as smart as I’d hoped they’d be) And you are here why?
The reason that I am against the “global warming” is that it it can not be proved, i.e it is not scientific. This means that we have the same opinion, but for different reasons.
Putin stated it can’t be proven. So your theory is false.
Please read what I wrote, then you will understand the reason why he is against the “global warming”.
It's right there in the article. You want to put some other spin on it - any article proving otherwise?
If you want to know why Russia want to increase the use of oil, and increase its price, you can read the text below:
Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov prompted more concerns over the health of the Russian economy Tuesday when he said there was a danger that the country's vast Reserve Fund could be entirely exhausted in 2016 if oil prices stay at their current level.

I’m against global warming because
a) I have never seen it affirmatively proven
b) government action to rectify this non-problem would have catastrophic economic consequences.
So, being a corrupt thug aside, I’m against the global warming scam for exactly the same reasons as Putin.
No wonder he has a 90%+ approval rating.....
Putin’s right. It’s a scam...
The global warming scam hurts Americans, Russians and all of us who are NOT liberal elite liars...
The Chinese also believe that Global Warming is a scam. They play along though because they get benefits. Same for the Russians.
Where’s Puny?
Putin vs. Pope
