Myths about marijuana are apparent in college papers, online, and in the media. The users are eager to believe they dont have a problem, so an entire mythology has grown up around the plant.
But here are the counterarguments

Ping for your intrest!
Talk to any drug counselor in the country and they all will tell you they have never treated an addict to advanced drugs that did not start with pot. It is THE gateway drug, regardless what the pot promoters claim.
Who smokes a pack a day?
Disclaimer: No dope here since 1977.
You’re one spreading the myths and pushing the liberal cause.
Yep. In the part you quoted, replace “marijuana” with “alcohol” and you get prohibition. And alcohol has a much more damaging effect on people and our culture.
“Talk to any drug counselor in the country and they all will tell you they have never treated an addict to advanced drugs that did not start with pot.”
Nonsense. Tobacco is usually the first drug followed by a beer or liquor, or vice versa. So, it would seem you are also advocating for those to be prohibited too.
When/if that excuse is gone, they'll find another. It's what they DO!
I do know of cases where pot helped cancer patients with palliative care, but I’m against calling it “medicinal pot” when potheads are using it to get high.
If they were honest with the public, maybe they’d get more traction. Just call it what it is: you want it legalized. Fine. Lobby your congressional representatives, senators, governor, etc. to make it law, and get it passed. Don’t try to slip it in as “medicinal” when you’re clearly trying to get it legalized for recreational purposes.
Most Americans today are tired of the cloak and dagger shit. Be straight up and honest with the public, and maybe you’d get more done.
With the name of code toad you have got to be a user.
No, it is not nonsense. There is an extensive study done concerning the gateway drug of choice, pot.
Tax it, commercialize it and the price gets too high. Users buy off the street and the control and revenue goes away. Just wait and see.
Do you have a link for source data and peer review results?
With a name like 'biff' you must be a moron.
Trying to label people as 'users' is nothing but you losing an argument and lashing out like a petulant child like a real 'Biff'.
It does seem that there is quite the national push for complete legalization, on par with alcohol and tobacco.
I’m kind of ambivalent I must admit. On one hand, this isn’t heroin or cocaine we’re talking about its marijuana.
On the other, as someone who has struggled with, at least, a mental addiction to it in the past, it’s not like alcohol. One hit and you’re high. And for me laws against it have been a big factor in helping me stay sober. I can’t believe I’m alone in that regard either.
Whatever though. I do think there are more pressing concerns facing our nation than this.
“If anyone tells you that they want it legalized for medicinal purposes, theyre liars.”
Guess that makes me a liar, except it’s the truth.
After 20+ years of prescribed meds for severe depression & anxiety & terrible withdrawal when switching meds & never being close to well we decided to give homemade cannabis edibles a try because I was getting worse.
We started in February of this year. Couple of cookies in the late afternoon & one at bedtime. It’s saved us a grand on doctor appointments & pills. I feel better now than I have since the early 70’s. I’m much more productive & sleep light years better than when taking pharma meds. It’s working for me. I have no doubt it works for other folks similarly.
Should have never been criminalized in the 1st place.
“Talk to any drug counselor in the country and they all will tell you they have never treated an addict to advanced drugs that did not start with pot.”
Urban myth.
There will always be a drug prohibition. Cigarettes are completely legal and the police killed a guy selling cigarettes illegally. When weed is legalized, it will be more expensive than stuff on the street because of taxes and legal fees. Teens will be forced to buy weed illegally. People will still be selling weed illegally and the law will still be cracking down on it.
You potheads will never win an argument. You see, I used to be one of you, a long time ago, probably before you were born. So all your talking points about the wonders of pot have been said before and will never work.
The truth will come out within 5 years in Colorado with them being the first to experiment with legal drugs. At least the truth should come out, depends on how much the media can suppress it.
So leave it lie, I am thru with you.
“When weed is legalized, it will be more expensive than stuff on the street because of taxes and legal fees. Teens will be forced to buy weed illegally. People will still be selling weed illegally and the law will still be cracking down on it.”
True, the cost of weed in the shops will be higher.
Teens won’t be forced to buy it at all actually & since they are minors wherever they buy it is always against the law.
In states that have legalized recreational use you can GROW YOUR OWN which eliminates the need to buy it from anyone.
The article complains about “half-truths and outright lies against common sense”, by using half-truths and outright lies that go against common sense.
(Myth 1: Marijuanas potency today is meek and mild)
This is the *first* time I have ever seen someone argue that marijuana today is weaker than it was. So put this down to a “straw man” argument. Illegal marijuana is sold based on its potency, so that would be like a car salesmen offering to sell you a car that “isn’t as good as cars they used to make.”
(Myth 2: Marijuana is harmless and even good for your otherwise healthy body)
Some 483 compounds are unique to Cannabis.
Marijuana is a very complex *combination* of chemicals. *Some* of them are known to be harmful. But *some* of them are known to counteract some of the harmful ones, *and* provide protection against them and related harmful chemicals. It gets even more complicated because many of them become different chemicals when combusted. So eating marijuana and smoking it are likely very different in their effects on the body.
Chemistry and Analysis of Phytocannabinoids and Other Cannabis Constituents
http://www.medicinalgenomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Chemical-constituents-of-cannabis.pdf
It should be noted that opponents of marijuana have long anticipated an epidemic of lung cancer among marijuana users, but it has never happened.
(Myth 3: “Marijuana is no more dangerous than alcohol”)
Not a myth at all. According to the CDC:
“Excessive alcohol use led to approximately 88,000 deaths... each year in the United States from 2006 2010, shortening the lives of those who died by an average of 30 years.”
No recorded cases of overdose deaths from cannabis have been found in the US. Three outside of the US, two of which had serious underlying cardiac conditions, and one of which was a frequent user of cocaine and amphetamines. And the reason *why* their deaths were attributed to marijuana was that it was the only drug in their systems at the time of their death.
(Myth 4: Smoking or eating marijuana is a safe “delivery system” for medical purposes)
See rebuttal for “Myth 2” above)
(Myth 5: Its my body, so I can do what I want with it without bothering anyone else)
This one is half and half. One of the loudest voices against marijuana is from “the business community” (think Chamber of Commerce), who complain that it (might) “lower productivity” among workers. I doubt many of us here would support what *they* want over our individual rights, in that they are pro-socialist internationalists, who favor abortion, Obamacare, gun control, and several other objectionable and un-American things.
But the argument against autonomy does have a valid point, and is a reasonable argument against marijuana use. That is, that marijuana makes you slow, unambitious, and somewhat stupid. It is self-evident, and even marijuana users can verify it. And it gives them a good rationale to discontinue their marijuana use.
