Oologah band mom is injured, O-T grad accused in OSU parade disaster
Oologah Lake Leader ^ | 10/24/15 | John Wylie

STILLWATER–Sheri Bates, mother of an Oologah High School Band member, was one of seven people officials listed as gravely injured Saturday when a car plowed into the OSU Homecoming Parade.

She was airlifted from the parade site to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City after a 2014 Hyundai Elantra plowed into the parade at its termination, killing three and injuring at least 34. One of the injured, a 2-year old child, died at The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center Saturday afternoon, bringing the death toll to four.

Bates’ condition and the extent of her injuries were not immediately released by the hospital. She is an employee of Lakeside State Bank in Oologah.

All members of the band were safe and returned to Oologah Saturday.

Stillwater Police said the driver who allegedly caused the carnage, first hitting an unmanned police motorcycle and then plowing into the crowd, was arrested at the scene on a complaint of driving under the influence.

Police identified her in a news release as Adacia Avery Chambers, 25, of Stillwater. She is a 2008 graduate of Oologah High School, according to the Leader’s annual graduation edition.

A computer records check shows that she has never been charged with any kind of offense in any of Oklahoma’s 77 counties. She was being held in the Stillwater City Jail Saturday afternoon, the police news release said.

The crash took place at Main St. and Hall of Fame Ave. at 10:31 a.m., after the O-T band had completed its role in the parade.

“The band members are all safe and accounted for,” said O-T Superintendent Max Tanner, who was at the event. “They were at the beginning of the parade and this was toward the end of the parade.

“The band was supposed to attend the homecoming game, but after all the events and how everybody was upset about what occurred, we decided it was best to take our students and our band and head back to Oologah.

“My prayers go out to those families involved in this.”

The police news release said that as of 1:20 p.m. officials had counted three fatalities and eight patients with critical injuries (seven transported to hospitals by helicopter and the eighth by ground ambulance to Stillwater Medical Center).

It also listed nine patients with serious injuries, and 17 more defined as “walking wounded” who were taken to the Stillwater hospital by private vehicle.

Adacia Chambers Tanner said the school was taking steps to provide for students needing support after the tragedy:

“We are in the process of getting everything taken care of right now and making sure we have people there.”

Chambers’ graduation biography listed her as an honor roll student, four-year member of the marching band and Colorguard captain for two years. She earned the Outstanding Colorguard Performance Award.

Then a Talala resident, she listed her goals as attending Northeastern State University and becoming a graphic designer. In 2010, she took a first place and best in show award in adult fine arts at the Rogers County Fair.

The Oklahoman newspapers quoted Adacia Chamber’s father as saying he couldn’t believe his daughter was involved.

He said she had attended homecoming festivities Friday night with family members but that her boyfriend had told him she was home by 10 p.m.

“This is just not who she is. They’re going to paint her into a horrible person but this is not (her),” he told the newspaper.

The Leader has so far been unsuccessful in reaching her family.

This is from Adacia Chambers' hometown newspaper. There is now a 4th fatality, a 2 year old child who died at the hospital. Ironically, the Oologah band marched in the parade, and one of the Oologah band moms, Sheri Bates is one of the gravely injured.

For those who are unfamiliar, Oologah is about 20 miles northeast of Tulsa, so it's at least 80 miles from Stillwater.

Ms. Chambers needs to be made a very public example of why drinking and driving is a bad idea.

One of the most poorly written news articles I’ve ever read. I know it’s from a school paper but just wow, the thing doesn’t hardly even make any sense.

And this gal had been part of that band, correct?

But, she did really well with them, and with everything, no?

So, there’s no obvious motive, although I suppose drunkeness might prove the explanation.

This is some crazy story.

I send prayers to the Lord for those killed and injured.

Ms is a term invented by radical leftist feminazis. The traditional use of Miss or Mrs. for females is favored by Conservatives.

“Ms.” with the period is short for “Miss”. “Ms” no period is what the feminazis use. “Miss” versus “Mizz”.

Why not use what Conservative Christians use? It’s just extra letter. :)

Adacia Avery Chambers, 25? Must be a relative.

Take a look at this: Ms. Magazine.

They're hardcore commies and use a period after Ms. Best to stick with Miss or Mrs. as Conservatives have used for generations. I've even seen some FReepers refer to Governor Sarah Palin as Ms. Palin here. Disgusting! They ought to know better than to have even a taint of liberalism in this pro-God, pro-life, pro-gun, anti-sodomy forum.

I think that has to be some sort of typo. The person’s name is Tanner, the rest is a mistake very likely.

No, no, that part’s confusing, but my guess is if you went to the link you’d see that “Adacia Chambers” is a caption to a picture, and “Tanner” starts the next sentence.

I think you’re right.

A wild idea occurred to me when I read that article. Sheri Bates worked at the local bank in that small town, and apparently had children in the band. She was standing there at that intersection with others when the car came down Main Street apparently.

I’m wondering if there is some remote possibility that this person was intentionally targeted by the driver. I still have trouble with the idea of 60 mph through two barricades to hit a crowd of people on that side street. Honestly, you would have to work really hard to get up to 60 mph, even drunk. Maybe especially drunk.

She also has an “empty eyes” look in her booking photo.

When I was growing up in the ‘70s, we knew who the lesbians were because they chose to be Ms. and not Miss.

Another post said that she came out of the Red Lobster. The driveways for that restaurant are the first ones from the intersection - I don’t see how a small car like that could accelerate that quickly.

Thanks so much for the positive rating, FRiend!

I'm an old, very traditional guy and just don't like what liberals have done to our language. I'm so old that I still think of "gay" as meaning happy and joyous instead of the cesspool definition that the sodomites have given that perfectly fine term. I occasionally shock some younger FReeper when I mention my "gay marriage" that lasted over 40 years until my beautiful Christian wife passed away. In the true sense of that word, every day of our marriage was genuinely gay and filled with the Lord's Abundant Blessings.
