It was the province, though our Calgary city council leans far to the left as well. It’s like cancer.

I’m very depressed.
Just got word this morning that I’m being laid off from my job as western editor for a trade publication after this month, too.

Beer tonight!
cheers
Jim

No at best center. But this is the type of country we live in.

BTW those percentages are percentages of SEATS WON. So while the liberals got 54% of the seats they got only 39.50% of the popular vote. The CPC popular vote was 32.1%

That is so true and took me years to finally accept and reconcile to. Also by my count based on popular vote 60% is the leftist vote (of all stripes, about 10% of that would be moderately left who were scared to pieces by the media). 32% is pretty much the conservative base.

I think the CPC were are surprised as everyone else. Canadians have a real difficulty with independent thought. Once the media and the other parties framed Harper as a “dictator” and “divisive”, Canadians just clung to those headlines. Ask most people “how was he divisive, they really could not elaborate.

More specifically he held to the base but no more. The 8% or so he picked up last time fled to the Liberals. It is real mystery as Trudeau is not your average Canadian, and has little more to bring to the party than nice hair.

Yes, it was an Obama repeat. As I understand this was a huge turnout. I saw lots and I mean lots of young voters.

Sounds like a certain candidate that's running today.

From the water cooler in a very liberal city:

“When I traveled in Europe I was treated very badly as a Canadian. Our reputation is not good in Europe. They ask how we can stand a warmonger like Harper. They are puzzled that Canada refused to sign on to global warming accords, and think the oil sands make Canada look bad”

To which I think who cares what has been Euro weenies think?

Pretty much Bibi is the only decent world leader left.

Yes, Canadian media and the average Canadian believes the fiction that the US is in recovery and has a growing job market.

Yup. I remember his father. Hell, I even voted for him before I woke up.

Been staying away from news & political sites for the past couple of days. Too depressing.

IMO Harper's biggest mistake was not grooming a successor and stepping down a year ago; the Tories should've gone into this campaign with a new leader. Nine years is too long for any PM

Canada Ping!

Part of the problem was that the media was actively campaigning for the Liberals (the journalist’s union was a registered third-party participant).

To vote in a Canadian election you have to show:

1) The voter’s card mailed to you by Elections Canada,
2) Proof of your address

Your information is then taken by a poll worker whom then finds your name on the voter’s list and crosses it out as you are handed a PAPER ballot. The ballots are all numbered, but no note is made of what # ballot you receive. The numbering is solely to ensure that only ballots from that polling station are included in its count.

Once you have your ballot, you proceed to the voting booth and mark the circle next to the name of the candidate you desire.

You then bring that ballot to the completed ballot box and insert it yourself.

While it’s nowhere near as high-tech as what you have down there, it’s a whole lot less prone to fraud as well.

Our municipal elections are a bit different, as the last few have used diebold machines. I much prefer the paper ballot. I’ve seen some questionable results from the diebold system even up here.

Thanks Don. The system you describe is much better. Fraud has been going on in US elections forever, especially in big Democrat cities. In Democrat strongholds the dead have risen again.😝

I forgot to mention that our electoral districts are delineated by an independent neutral body every 5 to 10 years, so gerrymandering is a very difficult operation.

Both our systems have their strengths and weaknesses.
