Even if he doesn’t get the nod, he will have a prominent spot in the next R Presidency.
I suspect this run is tactical, to prove he is a legitimate player. He will still be in his prime in 2024 and with this run, a run in 2020 against the R incumbent and his history as a strong Senator and his cabinet post (AG?) he will be hard to beat as the first Latino POTUS.

I’d personally go one step farther and execute any illegal for their deliberate defiance of the Constitution, but Ted Cruz’s proposed penalties will certainly deter many of these freeloaders from coming here.
