ROCKUMENTARY: OCTOBER 17, 1961

#14: Lee Dorsey: “Ya Ya”

Irving Dorsey (1924-86) was a New Orleans boy who was friends with Fats Domino before moving to Portland (OR). He served in the Navy in World War II and then began a career in boxing as a lightweight in Portland in the early Fifties under the name Kid Chocolate. He retired from boxing in 1955 and returned to New Orleans, where he opened an auto repair business as well as singing in clubs at night.

Lee teamed up with Allen Toussaint as his producer in 1960 and recorded this number in 1961 which became his first success and earned him a Gold Record.

Future successes were few and far between, so Lee never gave up his auto repair business.
