Stick a Fork in Establishment? Buchanan: Trump unbeatable unless flagging candidates unite

Donald Trump increasingly looks unbeatable in the Republican presidential nominating sweepstakes unless the GOP establishment can persuade a bunch of candidates to drop out early, conservative commentator Pat Buchanan said Friday.

Appearing on “The Laura Ingraham Show,” Buchanan said the dropouts likely will have to include Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor who previously looked invincible but whose fortunes have sagged under months of a withering onslaught by Trump.

“At some point, he does become an impediment to the establishment getting a comeback plan,” Buchanan said.

Trump, the billionaire real estate mogul and reality television star, continues to hold large leads in national polls and early state surveys. Buchanan said it is increasingly apparent that establishment forces cannot take Trump down with so many credible alternatives.

“It’s looking very, very difficult to see how they’re gonna take this nomination from The Donald,” he said.

“It’s looking very, very difficult to see how they’re gonna take this nomination from The Donald,” he said.

Buchanan suggested the establishment has a shot if it coalesces around a single candidate. And the best hope appears to be first-term Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, he said.

“He’s back in the pack, but he looks like the third horse coming around the far turn,” he said.

Trump terrifies the establishment, Buchanan said.

“He is not under any measure of control or discipline,” he said. “He’s a very entertaining candidate, and he’s full of verve and life. And I think he’s more disciplined than he was in July. And he’s putting on a great show.”

Buchanan compared Rubio to Rep. Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican whom many are trying to entice to become speaker of the House of Representatives. He is “a likable guy,” as is Rubio, Buchanan said. But if Ryan becomes speaker, he almost certainly will pursue the same policies on trade and immigration that turned grass-roots conservatives against outgoing Speaker John Boehner, he said.

And if Trump does take the nomination?

“All of a sudden, a lot of folks he was unaware they were supporting him are going to suddenly be around him. They’ll all be gravitating there. This city is full of people who want to work in the White House and in government and in the State Department and Defense and everything.

“And the closer Donald gets to that nomination, the more he’s going to hear from them.”

Carson just implodes if you share with people what he'

Please stop lying to yourself and others. Carson is out raising all the other GOP candidates in small donor money specifically BECAUSE people are listening and liking. Trash talking Carson may make you feel all profound and wise, it just makes you look like an idiot who has no clue what he is talking about.

I have friends who are in the political industry.

Trump terrifies them at a deep level. They (the polisci guys) are paid for by corporate and big donors. Now one of those donors just decided to play the game directly.

Trump is the first, he won’t be last.

They are not going to stop Trump even if they all unite behind 1 candidate.

GOP voters, by an overwhelming majority, say the Economy is their number 1 issue.

Trump leads on the Economy 60% to 7% over his closet rival in the polling data.

At this point the only person who can beat Trump is Trump. I think the only reason Trump is not doing even better is there is still some fear that he will flame out. Some people still are hanging on to a “spare tire” candidate.

I suspect that if Trump wins Iowa and New Hampshire the band wagon effect will kick in and this will be all over in March 2017

This is actually a correct assessment, and is why it’s to Trump’s advantage for all of the remaining 13 dwarfs to stay in the race until as long as they can hang in there.

‘If/when Trump becomes the nominee he better throw his weight around the issue of the Diebold and electronic voting machine ‘irregularities’... put the fear of God into anyone scheming to cheat the vote via electronic fraud.’

Trump is the ONLY one likely to do anything about Dem election fraud. The Dems have been utilizing wholesale fraud for years without a peep from the RNC. Trmp, by contrast, is legendary for his lawsuits. If he thinks critical votes have been or will be stolen from him, he will launch the mother of all lawsuits.

Just one more item to consider.

I don’t think that even if the establishment unites behind one candidate it will make any difference. And it could make things even worse for them.

Bingo. This is exactly why I think they’ll try something, probably many things.

Biden IS the dude who can unite them. He’ll easily take Hillary’s votes and part of Sanders.

So their whole reason for dropping out would be to stop Trump? Gets crazier every day.
. . . but Scot Walker said that that was a motivation for him to drop out.

Agreed. He’s not an ideologue. But he loves our country and it is a marked contrast with other candidates.

Well, if Trump can win it all, I hope he starts a whole new opposition party for the constitution loving American people.
At least picking Cruz for a VP would be a good start.

I still like Cruz best.
Cruz is the Constitutionator!!

Secretariat was thought to not be a long track horse (didn’t have the endurance). Also, his NO was to start slow and come from behind. When he came on strong the thought was that he’d wear himself out by the home stretch.

But he didn’t run out of gas and, in fact, got stronger. And the rest is history.

I’m guessing you mean Trump is Secretariat, because Rubio isn’t.

Rubio is hobbled due to his Gang ctivities.

It is so amazing. One would think that the GOPe would be thrilled to have a Republican candidate getting 30% of the vote.

But the GOPe is attacking him. They lose their power if he is elected.

The GOPe care more about *their* power than they care about their principles. They have no principles.

Seriously? Did you bother to read it?

Try actually reading what he said not just pull a sentence here and there out of context to validate your per-determined opinions

“Sad but true: Enter the parasites.”

Trump is a big parasite. Imagine parasites feeding off another parasite. I’m amazed at how gullible people are in regards to Trump.....so many fools. It is Obama all over again. Just in a different package and agenda, but still not really in America’s best interests. Both are driven by scary egos.

Wait, what? Obama HATES America, whereas Trump LOVES America! Please, cite something, anything which shows Trump does not love America and holds her interests below his own. There is nothing anywhere that would suggest that.
