Connecticut school district bans Halloween for reasons of 'inclusiveness'

In Milford, Conn., 350 parents have signed a petition requesting that the local school district restore the observance of Halloween, banned because officials say there have been several incidents of children being excluded due to "cultural beliefs."

EAG News:

Victoria Johannsen, a mother of a third-grader at Live Oaks School in Milford Public Schools, says she received a letter stating the school’s decision to no longer recognize Halloween “arose out of numerous incidents of children being excluded from activities due to religion, cultural beliefs, etc.,” the Connecticut Post reports.

The school is discontinuing a popular costume parade, banning students and staff from wearing costumes on the day and is rebranding Oct. 31st to be “fall themed.”

And if that’s not bad enough, Michelle Obama’s school lunch rules are impacting the lack of fun: “food is not an option” for classroom activities, according to the school’s letter.

“I think it’s crazy,” she tells the paper. “I don’t understand why other avenues weren’t pursued” to accommodate any families or children who felt excluded, she adds.

“I don’t think we’re excluding anybody,” Johannsen insists. “I think they’re excluding themselves.”

She and over 350 other parents have signed a petition calling on the school district to restore the fun and allow children to walk in the parade.

“These are our American customs and traditions and we should not have to give them up because others find them offensive!” the petition at Change.org reads. “I’m so tired (of) my kids missing out on some of the things we all got to do as children and are some of the greatest childhood memories I have due to others saying they find it offensive.”

Jim Richetelli, chief operations officer for Milford schools, tells the paper he has “no direct knowledge” about Live Oaks’ ban on Halloween, but claims such moves are out of a concern for diversity.

Maybe now they can celebrate Oct. 31 the right way:

Reformation Day :)

The Left are the Puritans today. Their stock in trade is misery. They want as much of that as possible, so that they are be assigned the task of "fixing" things.

A quick story about being “excluded” due to religious beliefs:

My mother raised us as Jehovah's Witnesses. So we weren't allowed to take part in the Christmas Party at school (late 1960’s). I remember one time we were told we could go down to the office and dust off books in the book shelf to occupy our time. After we'd done it for awhile one of the teachers brought us a tray full of Christmas cookies, chocolate milk and punch. We were told, “You aren't celebrating Christmas. You're being rewarded for your work”.

I don't remember which teacher it was that did this. But it meant a lot to me back then and still does today.

How much poison needs to be in a gallon of water before you consider the water to be poisoned? The biggest problem here appears to be that the problem is self-inflicted, followed by the low self-esteem required to make decisions that involve "everybody needs to love me."

School administration is not T-Ball, and everybody does not need to bring home a trophy.

Halloween, banned because officials say there have been several incidents of children being excluded due to "cultural beliefs."

What about the overwhelming majority of children who are now discriminated against and excluded from enjoying Halloween because of their cultural beliefs?

I admit that I’m old but, as a kid, I sure don’t remember Hallowe’en being the big deal it is today.

Seems as though it’s second only to Christmas in terms of the retail sector.

The Puritan’s View of Sex in Marriage

To make a long story short, they had lots of it and had fun too ( within marriage ).

A shame you were raised like that but this school is equally stupid.

So because a few may have been excluded, the school decided to exclude the many? There are descriptive words for people like these but I don’t want to get banned.

Why don't they ban baseball, too, because some children will feel excluded, either because they're not good enough or they come from a culture that doesn't play it.

I never understand this liberal desire for “diversity”.

So we celebrate diversity by banning certain activities or celebrations???

Yet in other contexts, such as homosexual pride parades, the diversity is celebrated by the celebrants being in our faces about homosexuality.

So now some are offended by Halloween, so we can’t celebrate it.

Yet we are seeing celebrations of out of mainstream sexual activity, and observance of minority religious celebrations such as Muslim observances. All are said to be promoting diversity.

If we are truly being diverse, wouldn’t we celebrate everything, and publicize everything, rather than banning certain things?? Aren’t these liberals really misusing and misunderstand what diversity means as they tell us to ban events as part of celebrating diversity?

RE: Seems as though it’s second only to Christmas in terms of the retail sector.

Well, come to think of it... after they ban Halloween, Christmas will be next.

They’ve already started with banning the “offensive” words: “Merry Christmas”

Halloween has become bigger. Adults are big on Halloween nowadays.

I’ve heard Halloween is very big in the homosexual community.

The students are not excluded by cultural beliefs. They exclude themselves because of cultural beliefs. There is a difference. The first requires that any activity not agreed to by 100% of the possible participants must not be undertaken. That covers just about everything more than breathing and may even include breathing.

Dress up in a costume to act out a fantasy.

Wear a mask so no one knows who you are.

Run around the crowded streets in the dark playing grab-ass and feeling little boys up.
