Turkish forces are said to have shot down a Russian jet after it flew into the country's airspace, according to unconfirmed reports on social media.
It has been claimed by eyewitnesses that there was a large explosion in Huraytan, northern Syria, while three fighter planes were seen overhead.
Rumours of a jet being shot out of the sky come amid heightening tensions between Russian president Vladimir Putin and the West.

This rumor seems to have been kicking around for more than a day. It still isn’t confirmed??
Nope, and they are reheating it as well if you read the copy closely...
Cheers!
I’ve heard nothing about this on any news here in Britain. If it were true, it’d certainly be one of, if not the top story on the news, television and radio.
I don’t trust the media here in US AT ALL. If the british media isn’t reporting on it then I’m gonna tend to think maybe it didn’t happen.
Turkey is not the West anymore.
Well, if it were true, they’d be shouting it from the rooftops.
It first appeared about 20 hours ago, or so, on I think the Express website and it said then it was unconfirmed. Now the Mail is repeating the story, what their game is I really am not sure.
But there’s been zero on the actual news today.
Russian pilot bails out after he runs out of Vodka
butlerweave, have you ever seen a communist drink a glass of water?
No, you will never see a commie drink water. Vodka is all they drink. Why?
Because of one of the most insidious plots ever perpetrated: fluoridation.
Im not sure the russians would be advertising it if the turks did indeed shoot down one of their jets. Pretty embarrassing.
At least the british press still has a shred of decency to report on world events. Our media has completely sold out to their political overlords. If it makes their guy look bad, we the american public probably won’t hear about it.
True. I watch BBC World News on occasion, which is actually world news. You see footage from actual film crews around the world. The so called “World News” on American networks is barely national news. Mostly just what happens in the Washington-NYC corridor.
Apparently not. If it did happen I can imagine a lot of back-channel communications are taking place. It's fine to run to the media and shout, "Russian incursion into Turkish airspace!" But when you take away all the bluster there is the Oh Sh*t! aspect to shooting down a Russian fighter, even if it was justified. Not the kind of thing you go crowing to the media about. It eliminates options. Nobody can save face and that's how you end up in an actual shooting war.
I'm reminded of a line from the HBO special John Adams where John is having a conversation with Ben Franklin about having insulted another member of the Continental Congress:
Adams: Should I have insulted him in private?
Franklin: It's perfectly acceptable to insult someone in private. They might even thank you afterwards for it. But when you do it in public people have a tendency to think you're serious.
An obsolete MiG-29 - flown by Syrian AF. Russians use them for training only.
If it was a 29 then it was Syrian AF and no one cares, else it was a mis-ID of a MiG-31 flown by a Russian - if so trouble will follow.
According to unconfirmed reports on social media?
The way to know this is BS is the fact Russia has not launched a counter strike and declared a no-fly zone over Syria.
The MiG-29S is still flown by Russia and is a quite capable aircraft. It sits somewhere between the F-18 and F-15C and would spank Turkey's F-16s.
Except it was not said if it was the S version. Anyway as far as anyone knows Russia has not brought in 29s, just 31s, and various SUs.
