Its not hard to get your hands on illegal guns and rifles in America. It took me about two hours. I called a guy from the old neighborhood in LA, said something about a piece, and, hours later, I was staring at an AK-47 and an illegally modified AR-15, which were sitting on a kitchen table. Welcome to America.
Admittedly, he was surprised at my interest in being strapped since its been a good minute since I was about the life, but when I explained I was simply curious to see how long itd take for me to get a gat, he agreed to the idea. He had some handguns, too, he said, although I didnt see em. I took his word for it after seeing the AK-47 and AR-15, because those weapons leave an impression.
Some of the weapons were smuggled in, while others were bought on the up and up waiting period and all. Moving them is not his thing; he collects, and, on occasion, heads out to the desert with others to shoot. If I needed something, we could talk to another homie and with a few hundred dollars out of pocket, Id be set. I passed on the opportunity.
I didnt expect my search to be so successful especially since the black market usually requires some know-how, something I dont have much of these days, since, well, Ive done a complete 180, and I rarely spend anytime even associating with people running afoul of the law. But it was shockingly easy.
Looking at these highly dangerous weapons, I felt deeply disturbed despite being a veteran and having served in Iraq. Theres something about seeing these weapons here in the US and not in a combat zone; it makes it all too unsettling, as

Who the hell calls an AK a ‘gat’? Does this guy only speak single syllable words in his vocabulary also?
Absolutely true, but I’m sure all of these criminals with illegal guns will be more than happy to comply with Obama’s new laws. To a very large extent, more laws - of any type - have little to no effect on criminals. Murder, possession of fully-automatic weapons without a Class III FFL, trafficking in drugs, etc., are already illegal. New laws do, however, have an effect on (previously) law-abiding citizens. They make more criminals.
“They dont even need my SSN on the form.”
SSN isn’t required, but supposedly helps to speed up the process. You’re fortunate if because of your unique last name the process goes quick for you. Some people I know get delayed every single purchase. Evidently there is an NICS PIN# a person can apply for which make the check instant. I don’t know anyone who’s gone through that process though.
Well, well, well. The lawbreaking-author, Edward Rodriguez, committed an illegal act. What a surprise. In fact, this criminal disproves his entire implied-premise, that more laws are needed to reign-in the ‘horrible’ number of guns in the USA. That only bad guys refuse to obey the law is proved once again.
A simpering pansy "journalist" that saw too many Jimmy Cagney movies while getting his theater degree?
The fact that something is illegal doesn’t mean it can’t be obtained. If you have the money and are willing to step outside the law you can get damn near anything you want. Guns, explosives, drugs, adolescent sex slaves, whatever.
Moving them is not his thing; he collects, and, on occasion, heads out to the desert with others to shoot. If I needed something, we could talk to another homie and with a few hundred dollars out of pocket, Id be set.
The article is propaganda. The title is misleading (surprise!), author is lying, leftie is fixated on evil assault rifles and fails to even accurately describe them (what mods??), some were smuggled probably means bought legally elsewhere..or refers to magazine size.
That said, If you add DOJ/AFT following "the mob" your conclusion would be more valid.
I wonder if his sketchy friend could also get him some crack, herion, or other pharmaceutical of choice. If so, they should make more laws against it. /sarc
Exactly. He just publicly confessed.
And yet no law abiding gun owner procures their weapons the way he did. So this is relevant to which gun control argument?
Yeah, I have two buddies who have to use the SSN. Too many with their name combos.
Was it a full-auto/selective fire AK or just a semi-auto knockoff? What was “illegally modified” about the AR? Or does this moroon even know enough about guns to ask?
Total bs.
So taking guns from law-abiding citizens is going to solve this program?
Let me correct that statement for you:
And yet fully automatic AK-47s and AR-15s are ALMOST NEVER used in committing crime, and the rare instances legally registered Title 2 firearms under the NFA of 1934 were UNLAWFULLY POSSESSED AND USED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT IN THE COMMISSION OF CRIMES.
I was in the UK and bought a nuclear missile in 10 minutes. Totally true bro! Journalism is sweeeeeeeet bra.
“And yet fully automatic AK-47s and AR-15s are NEVER used in committing crime.”
I don’t know about that, since I’m always seeing the actors who think that all guns should be banned are always using fully automatic weapons in their movies .....
But since the guns almost all of us own do not have a `select-fire’ feature (full auto/semi-auto), semi-automatic firearms don’t satisfy the definition of an “assault rifle/weapon.
And the last figure I recall, these non-assault rifle ARs and AKs are used in less than 2% of all firearm crimes.
I used “Never” in a statistical sense.
There may be a handful of crimes committed with them per year. But they fall well under 1%.
As noted upthread, the incidence of long-rifle crime commission is WAY under 5%, and last I read was under 1%. I greatly suspect those numbers are almost all bolt rifles or semi-automatics. The rate of fully automatic rifles among them will be a miniscule fraction.
So, when you get down to a miniscule fraction of a <1% group, you are dealing with a statistical “Never”. Not exactly NONE, but effectively NEVER.
When someone gets around to counting crimes committed by firing fully automatic weapons, I’ll bet there are fewer than TEN per year in the country.
Class 3 Weapons Crime Numbers

It might suprise you to learn that machine guns are not as evil as some would lead you to believe. Watching TV, Movies and the news reports, you might think that there are violent crimes involving fully automatic weapons every weekend.
How many deaths would you say were attributed to class 3 weapons in 2010?
How many deaths would you say in the last decade were attributed to class 3 weapons?
How many civilians were killed with class 3 weapons since the ban was instituted?
Do you have you numbers ready? Well, there isnt a true clearing house for all of these numbers and there are some discrprencies in the reports, but the numbers are staggering.
According to GunCite.com, in 1995 there were about 240,000 machine guns registered with the ATF. About half of those are registered to private civilians with the rest belonging to police and military.
GunCite.com says that there have been 2 crimes committed by legal owners of machine guns. The first was committed by a policeman in Dayton, Ohio in 1988. The second occurred in 1992 and little information can be found about this one.
