HOUSTON The noisy debate over this citys Proposition 1 has centered on whether it would allow men to use womens public restrooms, which boils down to how you define men and women.
In a battle that has ranged from bathroom etiquette to gender rights to constitutional debates over religious freedom, a key skirmish broke out after former Houston Astros baseball all-star Lance Berkman appeared in an ad saying that the Nov. 3 ballot measure would allow troubled men who claim to be women to enter womens bathrooms, showers and locker rooms, and the Yes on 1 campaign fired back.
Prop. 1 will NOT allow men to enter womens restrooms, says a post on the website Houston Unites, the group supporting Proposition 1.
By men, however, the campaign is excluding biological men who identify as women. Proposition 1 would ban discrimination in public accommodations such as restrooms based on 15 characteristics, including gender identity.
In other words, anyone who tries to stop a biological man who identifies as a woman from using a womens room would be in violation and could face fines of up to $5,000, if the measure succeeds.
Obviously, when somebody identifies as transgender, its a transitioning process that we dont really know where people are at in that, said Richard Carlbom, campaign manager for Houston Unites. Ultimately, people who live and work in society as women should be using the womens restroom, and people who live and work in society as men should use the mens restroom.
Proposition 1 allows voters to decide the fate of the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance, the hotly contested law pushed by Houston Mayor Annise Parker, a Democrat, and passed by the Houston City Council last year....

So, cheek swabs ...
Yup. She’s the one who subpoenaed the pastor’s sermons to see what he was saying in them. I think her office was inundated with bibles.

I have a suggestion.
How about we jettison all this talk of “gender identity” and “ transwhatever” peoples.
Let’s define a man, as someone who is biologically male, and has the male penis.
Let’s define a woman, as someone who is biologically female, who was born with a vulva and vagina.
Is it really so hard to define man and woman???
Understood that some people are sexually confused, attracted to the same sex, and may have sexual behavior problems. But when it comes to the definition of the male and the female, that would seem to be a straight forward issue to deal with.
keep your laws off my package!
Let’s simplify this. Women prefer that people having dicks stay out of women’s restrooms.
How about one bathroom for people who have male reproductive organs, one bathroom for people with female reproductive organs, and one bathroom for people with neither, regardless of what sex or species of animal or plant that you may identity as.
What is so hard to understand about ‘if you have a dick and balls, you are a guy and if you have a vagina, you are a gal’?
When will authentic men and women (not sure anymore what % of us that is) have enough of this garbage and scream “That’s enough! STFU!”
This is an example of what happens when there are no men left. Because a man would tell another man, if I catch you walking in on my daughter or wife...
You have obviously forgotten we're now in the "Twilight Zone"
Imagine if you will...a time when we could no longer define......
My husband was out to dinner with some business friends, in Dallas, last night. One of them shot a photo of him standing in front of a bathroom marked “Gender Neutral”. This country is going to hell very quickly.
Simple. Have a guard at the restroom doors with scissors. If a guy wants in the ladies room he gets snipped first.
Seems like every month some kooky bill or proposition come up in Houston.
Could it be related to the mayor’s lesbian status? /s
I would think women would protest this emphatically.
To think that a woman is nothing more than a surgically mutilated man on some hormones is highly insulting.
Just like as a man, I am insulted that a woman with an addadictome is somehow considered a "man".
Sorry, but surgical alterations do not make a man or a woman, there is so much more.
Bingo.
The chromosomal approach is flawed both biologically and sociologically. There are conditions which cause persons with an XY chromosome pair to develop morphologically as females, while what rightly disturbs normal people in circumstances like bathrooms and locker-rooms is encountering people with complimentary genitalia to their own.
Yes, but what if you identify your dick as a lady part?
What if you identify your Y chromosome as an X chromosome?
These snakes will think of an answer for everything!
If I had a daughter, and she needed to use the ladies room, I would be that armed guard.
