Carly Fiorina: It’s time for the U.S. to impose a no-fly zone around American-backed rebels in Syria

Via Breitbart, I realize that every GOP candidate is under pressure right now to contrast themselves with Obama by showing how they’d stand up to Putin. I also realize that Fiorina, fairly or not (i.e. not), bears a special burden in proving how tough she’d be as president to voters who are leery of making a woman commander-in-chief. Politically, this is a fine answer for a Republican primary. We’re going to use the world’s greatest air force to protect our people on the ground over there, and if Putin tries to cross the line, he’ll see what he gets. And maybe that’s all it’s intended to be — a fine answer for a primary.

Strategically, though, it seems like a borderline nutty overcorrection to Obama’s passivity. Show of hands: Who wants to put American airmen in the line of fire and risk World War III to defend a group of Sunni Muslim fighters on the ground who are likely only nominally “moderate” and whose loyalty to the United States rests entirely on continued supplies of cash and weapons? These aren’t the Marines that Russia is bombing. This is the Free Syrian Army, some members of which have been known to switch to ISIS when they thought the U.S. wasn’t being hard enough on their enemy Assad. Putin’s attack on them yesterday deserves some kind of reprisal because it was, and was intended to be, a humiliation of the United States, but there’s a big difference between saying “we need to respond” and “we need to respond with an air war over Syria.” Especially when, strange though it may seem, the U.S. may be overmatched in an air battle with Russian forces:

America-backed rebels?

Which faction of ISIS or Al Qaeda is that?

"the Chinese starting now too"

Is there anything besides an Assad journalist speculating on Chinese involvement...out there anywhere?

I'm looking and have found squat.

"The first Syrian-Russian-Iranian offensive seems to be aimed directly at the Obama-backed rebels in Hama and Homs, and should kick off in the next day or two, if it hasn’t already."

I'm not convinced the Russians wouldn't hit ANY "rebel" force in those areas.

Their stated objective is to ensure the survival of the Assad regime and the institutions of governance.

That starts with a clear logistical path from Latakia/Tartus to Damascus. Anything unfriendly in that path will be neutralized first.

From Russia's and Assad's point of view, all the rebels are the same, without regard to race, religion or national origin.

I agree with your hypothesis, but if you look at the Syria Control maps, the “moderate rebels” are the ones holding/blocking the Damascus supply route.

That's why they're dead meat.

And, Obama/Kerry/Carter know that shortly the full extent of their secret little war is going to be exposed.

CIA and Special Forces on the ground. The introduction of sophisticated weapons. Logistics trains.

With the objective, not of fighting ISIS, but of toppling Assad...outside US Law.

That's why they're scrambling to cut a deal with the Russians...in the political sphere.

She is EXACTLY what the libs thought Reagan would be and Trump will be.

...she is the one that has to be stopped, before getting her finger on the button. We don’t psycho-babe running this country, there’s very little room for errors and emotional responses.

I think this should seal it for her - VERY FEW Americans want this country doing a damn thing in that part of the world, other than getting oil and maybe defending Israel.

“Last I saw there was somewhere around 5 rebels left that Obama had trained. I think Carly is clueless.”

Yea, she seems to be following the Obama approach, which is to have the two big sides, ISIS and Basher fight a PERFECTLY BALANCED war of attrition...until there are virtually no weapons and no troops left.

At that point, our 50 US-Trained college students will MARCH INTO DAMASCUS with their BB Guns at the ready and establish the first true democracy in the Arab World.

...somehow I don’t think it will end that way.
