"Matt Bruenig is researcher of poverty and welfare systems at the think tank Demos."
By now, it is well established that capitalism is fundamentally built upon threats of force. As libertarian philosophers Robert Nozick and Matt Zwolinski have explained, the only way to turn unowned natural resources (such as land, minerals and other goods) into privately owned property is by violently preventing all others from using them. This one-sided exclusion destroys freedom of movement and cuts many people off from the things that they need to survive.

Well, at least he is a communist. And he is communicating their position.
This article is hilarious. He condemns capitalism by arguing that it is based on force—the state keep people off your property.
Then he argues that a “universal, basic income” would be great! Which, of course, would be based on force to get the money to pay the income.
All force is created equal. Only some force is more equal than others?
Why distinguish between natural and man-made resources?
I have land - I have a garden on that land. I want neither squatters nor pilferers.
Perhaps I would like to avail myself of the homes, cars, offices, and bank accounts of Messrs. Nozick, Zwolinki, and Bruenig. Would they call the forces of state-sponsored violence to stop me?
This time socialism will work!
Toilet paper must be one of those natural resources that are becoming a hot commodity: in Venezuela - it is great to see how socialism is shared poverty. I bet they are all loving it.
Fixed it.
This whole idea of a universal basic income for everyone is completely insane. Wouldnt it be better to just give each person in the U.S. a trillion dollar coin instead of a “universal basic income” coin? After all, the cost to make a “universal basic income” coin is the same as the cost to make a trillion dollar coin, and everyone would be RICH with the trillion dollar coin and not have to exist at just a subsistence level with the “universal basic income” coin. Everyone could buy anything they wanted and no one would ever have to work again.
The coins could be made from a base metal, so they would be cheap to make, and a few extra ones could be minted for the government itself, so taxes could be completely eliminated and yet government could still function. Its such an elegant solution I dont know why it hasnt been implemented yet.
For myself, Im going to start by buying a pony and the Broncos NFL football team. And I wont even need pony food stamps anymore to feed my pony because Ill be so rich.
I hope you aren’t thinking I approve of this dummy’s article. The author of the article would be one of the first ones stood up against a wall and shot, in his utopia.
I disagree with Matt not because of political and philosophical differences, I disagree with him because I think he’s criminally insane and I’m not!
“As libertarian philosophers Robert Nozick and Matt Zwolinski...”
Sure thing that’s who I go to for an explanation of capitalism. I would never try Hayek or Friedman
The economic math is simple:
Universal basic income = the new $0.00
Folks, this is a op-ed piece in the Washington Post.
It is not the work of Dynachrome.
It was put here to be read by Conservatives and shot down using Conservative logic.
Please don't shoot the messenger. He doesn't buy in anymore than you do.
LOL
That’s their byline isn’t it.
“Was never given a fair chance those other times that cost close to or over a 100 million lives.”
Thanks, I thought I have been clear enough where I stand here on FR. And my comment about the “cupcake” that wrote this drivel is a tipoff.
It is also well established that every other economic system involves a good deal more force and coercion, because when you take away the free marketplace you also replace freedom with force. ...
Their is no word in the English language to describe this mans utopian ignorance. He is an uber-fool and a dangerous one at that!
You would think....
