Hundreds of Iranian troops have arrived in Syria in the last 10 days and will soon join government forces and their Lebanese Hezbollah allies in a major ground offensive backed by Russian air strikes, two Lebanese sources told Reuters.
"The (Russian) air strikes will in the near future be accompanied by ground advances by the Syrian army and its allies," said one of the sources familiar with political and military developments in the conflict.
It points to an emerging military alliance between Russia and Assad's other main allies - Iran and Hezbollah - focused on recapturing areas of northwestern Syria that were seized by insurgents in rapid advances earlier this year.
"The vanguard of Iranian ground forces began arriving in Syria: soldiers and officers specifically to participate in this battle. They are not advisors ... we mean hundreds with equipment and weapons. They will be followed by more," the second source said. Iraqis would also take part in the operation, the source said
The Russian air force began air strikes in Syria on Wednesday, targeting areas near the cities of Homs and Hama in the west of the country, where Assad's forces are fighting an array of insurgent groups, though not Islamic State, which is based mostly in the north and east.

You KNOW... that's coming.
No mention of the Kurds? Hmmmmm, they’re in trouble again/still.
The Russians won’t be going home. There will be a permanent Russian air base in Syria, and a permanent naval base.
We just might be witnessing the beginning of WWIII.
You also KNOW that the first assaults won’t be against ISIS, they’ll be against “US backed rebels”. You can count on it. Good going mr resident.
We just might be witnessing the beginning of WWIII.

More like complete capitulation by Obama. There is no way he will respond to any provocation, no matter how grave. Putin knows this.
On the march. The Kurds are in a state of limbo, almost every hand against them, and no known allies anywhere.
You want a “safe zone” for the Yazidis and Christians in Syria? Then provide a portion of land taken from Syria and Iraq, and use that area to create a core province for Kurdistan. While you are at it, take a piece out of Turkey as well.
If I understand this correctly, first and foremost Assad and Russia will get rid of both CIA trained Syrian Alliance soldiers. Once they are done with that, any other group who went against Syria, minus ISIS will be eradicated. The intention here is to send them back into Iraq.
Finally Russia and Iran, with Syrian support will start a downward movement, go village to village, town to town. city to city and destroy ISIS and anything else, (re: Sunni’s) in its path. Once the Shiites in Iraq take charge, Iran will become firmly entrenched in Iraq.
Kuwait and Saudi Arabia will then have the Shiites on their doorstep.
And all because the President of the United States thought it was a good idea to kill Qaddafi, let the Bruthas take over Egypt, let Yemen fall apart, let Islam kill thousands of Christains all over Africa and the Middle East and finally try to dislodge Assad from his post.
Obama might actually be the 12th Mahdi.
That or he’s hastening his arrival.
Just for shits and giggles, Putin should give a briefing on the day's objectives and future strike operations and call out the Russian/Iranian/Chinese/Assad organization as:
Ground Operations Group (GOG), and the Navy/Marine detachment at Tartus and Latakia as:Marine Assault General Operations Group (MAGOG).
Watch heads explode......or the world.
“Iraqis would also take part in the operation”
What the?????
In Syria?
Madness.....just madness.
Thanks Democrats. What else are you going to do? Grease the floors in the old folks homes?
By the time Carter vacated the WH the Russians/Soviets had troops and surrogates all over sub-Saharan Africa and in SEA and, of course, Afghanistan. It was looking like the USA was withdrawing from the 20th century and the rest of the world was being ceded to the Soviets.
