Judge Napolitano: Potential fraud if kid’s clock was ‘purposeful hoax’; electronics experts weigh in

The family of 14-year-old Muslim student Ahmed Mohamed is planning to take legal action against the school for calling police after a teacher discovered a “homemade clock” that looked eerily similar to an explosive device, while questions continue to be raised about whether the incident was a “purposeful hoax.”

Amid comments from electronics experts who say it appears that Mohamed simply took apart a 1970s era alarm clock and reassembled it in a pencil box, Judge Andrew Napolitano said the family may face charges if the incident is proven to be a publicity stunt.

“If this was part of a purposeful stunt and if the parents were involved in this and if everybody from Mark Zuckerberg to President Obama fell for this, this is not good,” Napolitano said in an appearance Monday on “The Kelly File.”

After being arrested, Mohamed was invited by Obama to bring his clock to the White House, and Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Facebook, invited the student to his headquarters.

As a result of the media uproar over the incident, legal and scholarship funds were set up for Mohamed, resulting in thousands of dollars being donated — which Napolitano said could bring more troubles for the family.

“If the parents were involved in the hoax, now you now have a fraud going on because money has been collected on false pretenses,” he said.

The Fox News senior judicial analyst said all the attention over the case is because the student is Muslim.

“This is people overreacting because of his last name, or his skin color, or the atmosphere of fear,” he told host Megyn Kelly.

“We saw a clock, we assume it’s dangerous,” Napolitano added. “The kid who made the clock, or brought it in, has a Muslim ancestry. I wish race could be out of this, but all of that goes aside if this was some sort of a purposeful stunt.”

He should be charged with terrorism. Bringing the device to school was to terrorize people.

If a kid brought a plastic gun to school, he would be in serious trouble. I see no difference here.

Obama also jumped quickly on the Gates arrest in 2009, the Travon Martin case, the Michael Brown shooting. Once the facts were in on all of these “incidents” the truth turned out to be very different from the fiction spread by the media, the agitators, and the White House.

No one seems to care after the fact these incidents turn out to be very different than portrayed. What matters is the story, the politics, and the animosity generated. What Obama is demonstrating is the truth doesn’t matter. He accomplishes his objective and moves on every time. The American people don’t care.

Not so funny when a similar-looking device that actually is hooked up to C-4 explosive is carried into a crowded shopping mall.

The ninth grader is the son of Mohamed Elhassan Mohamed, a Sudanese immigrant who has made headlines of his own over the years. A February 2015 profile in the North Dallas Gazette details the elder Mohamed’s activities.

Born in Sudan in 1961, Mohamed, a former customs worker at Khartoum International Airport, earned a degree in philosophy from Cairo University in Khartoum before emigrating to the U.S. “Once I realized my dream was bigger than what Sudan had to offer I immigrated to America in the mid-1980’s,” he told the North Dallas Gazette. In that same interview, Mohamed shared that upon arrival in the U.S.– where he says his degree was not accepted– he initially sold hot dogs, candy, and newspapers in Manhattan. “I realized this wasn’t enough for me, and I packed my bag and moved to Dallas, Texas y’all,” he told the paper.

In Texas, he started out as a pizza delivery man before becoming a taxi driver and ultimately launching his own business ventures– he owns a computer repair shop in Irving, Texas (perhaps where his son gets his tech acuity from), a cab company called Jet Taxi, a medical emergency transport company called Paradise Prime Investments, and the solar energy business AlSufi International in Sudan. He also served as self-elected president of the small Sufi Muslim AlSufi center in Irving.

Mohamed has also run for president of Sudan on two separate occasions. “When I went for the elections in 2010 they were rigid,” he told the North Dallas Gazette. “When I was there my country was worse than I had left it. I saw people starve, and babies, die, and women cry in Darfur. No peace. No justice. So I am back to save my Sudan, so help me God. I’m hope for my country to become great, and to reestablish good connections with America. My country is going through economic hardship because of the embargo, and I would like to lift it.”

In 2012, when the Florida pastor made good on his threat to burn a Quran in his Gainesville church and put the Quran on “trial,” Mohamed, who refers to himself as a sheik, was apparently the one Muslim willing to play along as the defense in the mock trial. “[The church] put an ad on their channel: ‘Whoever feels in himself he has the power to defend Quran is welcome,’” he told the Dallas Observer.
