Statins: Heart disease drug speeds up ageing process, warns new research
Sunday Express (UK) ^ | Sunday, Sept 27, 2015 | By LUCY JOHNSTON

Fears are growing over the side effects of cholesterol-lowering pills

Scientists have found the heart disease drug badly affects our stem cells, the internal medical system which repairs damage to our bodies and protects us from muscle and joint pain as well as memory loss.

Last night experts warned patients to “think very carefully” before taking statins as a preventative medicine.

A GP expert in the field said: “They just make many patients feel years older. Side effects mimic the ageing process.”

The new research by scientists at Tulane University in New Orleans has reignited the debate about statin side effects which many doctors say have been played down.

They include memory loss, muscle pain, diabetes, cataracts, liver dysfunction, diabetes, fatigue and memory loss. Millions of Britons currently take statins to combat the risks of heart attacks

Professor Reza Izadpanah, a stem cell biologist and lead author of the research published in the American Journal of Physiology, said: “Our study shows statins may speed up the ageing process.

“People who use statins as a preventative medicine for heath should think again as our research shows they may have general unwanted effects on the body which could include muscle pain, nerve problems and joint problems.”

"This research reinforces what has long been suspected. The side effects of statins mimic the ageing process." —Dr Malcolm Kendrick, GP

The scientists who treated stem cells with statins under laboratory conditions found that after a few weeks the cholesterol-busting treatment had a dramatic effect.

Statins prevented stem cells from performing their main functions, to reproduce and replicate other cells in the body to carry out repairs.

The researchers found the statins prevented stem cells from generating new bone and cartilage.

They also found they increased ageing.

Professor Izadpanah said: “People at high risk of heart disease can reduce this risk by taking statins. However, considering the adverse effects of these drugs and their association with so many side effects, it is crucial people are fully aware of the risks before they take the treatment.” Vanessa Redgrave survives severe heart attack thanks to answer...

Dr Malcolm Kendrick, a GP in Macclesfield, Cheshire, who has studied heart health and statins, said: “Statins just make many patients feel years older. This research reinforces what has long been suspected. The side effects of statins mimic the ageing process.

“I observe patients on statins slowing down. Some are not affected, for some it is a relatively subtle process, but for many it is a serious side effect and one which disturbingly helps us confirm what we have long suspected.” The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence says the findings could save lives

Millions of Britons currently take statins to combat the risks of heart attacks, but a 10-year NHS plan has already been introduced to prescribe the drug to low-risk patients with only a 10 per cent chance of a heart attack within a decade.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence claims this could save thousands of lives.

But critics say much of the trials data has never been made public and more work is needed to ensure routine use is not harmful.

That food pyramid is upside down.

Eating lots of ‘healthy whole grains’ and following that food pyramid turned me into a t2d.

Reversing that stopped the t2d cold.

YMMV, of course.

To be honest, I don’t know what my numbers were before or after I started the red rice yeast.

My doctor never tells me, he just tells me to keep doing what I’m doing, so I guess he’s happy with the results.

I’m sorry I couldn’t be more detailed.

My endochrineologist told me the same thing. He said that too many carbs was the true culpret in elevated cholesterol.

Last year I had symptoms of a heart attack, which it wasn’t, thankfully, but the ER doc said something that struck me as odd at the time. He said, one thing I could do to keep my heart healthy is brush with baking soda. I thought he was ....goofy! Maybe not, eh?

Not at all!

We have been trying like he77 to get the protocols out but being blocked at every turn by the big pharm and the companies that billions of of selling toothpaste. They are the ones who get our videos on YouTube censored. I am very glad to hear that the word is filtering out to the front line doctors whose paychecks are not affected by drugs and care more about their patient's lives.

Don't forget rinsing out your mouth once a week or more often with the 20 to one Clorox™ solution. As I wrote in 2011, that final step kills the spirochetes that wear blue suit in the red cape with the yellow S on it. . . We do not want to breed generations of baking soda resistant spirochetes.

How do you do that? Do you mix it with water and make a paste, or what?

What do you think of mixing it with Hydrogen Peroxide, as a tooth whitener?

I generally have a small shot glass size container of baking soda I put on the Shower door frame top before I get in the shower. . . I pour it into my hand at the end of my shower and then keep dipping my toothbrush into as I brush my teeth until it's gone. Brush my tongue and the back of your throat as far as you can reach with your tooth brush or a tongue brush and you'll cure any incipient sore throats and colds that might be starting and you'll have really fresh breath, too. Use the shower stream to help rinse. Done.

We do NOT recommend mixing the baking soda with anything as you will get chemical reactions. Not a good idea. Also Hydrogen Peroxide is not a great germ killer for some of the buggies that live in the mouth. . . they actually LIKE the oxygen it releases. Unless you can get an Ozone generator, some of them thrive on Oxygen. You can wind up using too much Hydrogen Peroxide and making your teeth sensitive . . . and way too much can make your teeth transparent. NOT GOOD!

Baking soda kills the bacteria by crenation, the same process you all may have seen when someone pours salt on a snail or slug. It really is not poisonous. . . but suddenly all the water that is inside the bacteria REALLY wants to be OUTSIDE the bacteria to meet and shake hands and be friendly with the Baking Soda. . . as fast as it can. This is not healthy for bacteria of any kind. It has a five second kill time.

The Clorox™ Dakin's solution has a 2 second kill time. . . and kills by chlorinating the bugs. It's like strong swimming pool water. Chlorine is a very poisonous product, but safe in the Dakin's concentration. . . but NO stronger. It is very useful because it is the only known substance that will dissolve plaque. . . but it also dissolves skin (that's why it feels slippery) so don't try a stronger solution under the theory that stronger would be better. Don't worry about swallowing any of it. It turns instantly into salt water.

I also take 2,000mg of MegaRed Fish Oil daily.

I take fish oil supplements also, but recent trials have indicated that these supplements have no effect on heart attack or stroke. The reason seems to be that the Inuit tribes who gave rise to the original recommendations on Omega-3 fatty acids and fish oil have developed a mutation to metabolize Omega-3, and the rest of us don't have that ability. We still have a lot to learn, obviously. More here.

I think this is a lot of hogwash. I’ve been taking them for 17 years now and I’m not losing my marbles nor aging noticeably.

It wasn't "hogwash" for me, Richard. In just six months I was aging visibly, with my skin thinning and liver spots appearing on my arms and hands. There is a bell curve on how any drug effects human beings . . . and some are on the extreme end of it. You may be one of the lucky ones to have no side effects. . . but even innocuous drugs have a small minority where the side effect is death.

Ya know, I bet something in tobacco kills them too. Smokers have much lower incidence of alzheimers from what I remember.

What I find interesting about antidepressants is that the warning labels have changed for political reasons. Where the used to warn that they could have “suicidal and homicidal ideation” as one of the side-effects, almost all of the psychoactive drugs now only list “suicidal ideation” and have dropped the “homicidal” portion of that warning. . . since the fact that every single one of the mass shooting offenders was on one or more of these drugs either while or shortly before they committed their crimes! Do you see a connection to that sudden editing of the PDR warnings??? I certainly do.

I take Red Rice Yeast instead of statins.

Red Yeast Rice is a statin drug...

FDA withdrew many red yeast rice supplements from the market because these supplements were too similar in chemical structure to the strictly regulated prescription statin known as Mevocor. In fact, red yeast rice is almost identical to lovastatin, which is the key ingredient in the statin drug Mevacor.

It's important to understand that taking a substance that acts identically in the body to the prescription statin drugs can cause the same side effects. As we mentioned earlier, red yeast rice is almost identical to lovastatin, which is the key ingredient in the statin drug Mevacor.

Therefore, some of the possible red yeast rice side effects include the less serious side effects such as gastrointestinal upset to the potentially serious to the point of life threatening side effects like elevated liver enzymes and muscle wasting rhabdomyolysis.

In addition, statin drugs have demonstrated that they can deplete, and/or lower the levels of CoQ10, which is a vital nutrient our bodies need to function properly.

CoQ-10 (should be ubiquinol)is a necessary supplement with or without the statins. L-Carnitine is also beneficial, as is Hawthorn Berry Extract, Vitamin C (1 gram 2 to 5 times a day) and a couple other things, such as a good Vitamin K supplement, Magnesium, and Vitamin D3 (these put the calcium causing plaque buildup in the arteries back into the bones where the calcium belongs).

Vitamin K comes in three kinds. Each is important...K1 and two types of K2. And much higher doses than is normally suggested. Vitamin D3 is safe at high doses, and a moderate, essential safe dose is 10,000 IU daily. If you live in Florida and spend a lot of time in the sun, you don't need as much. If you live in Florida or anywhere else and you are dark skinned, you need to supplement the 10,000 IU daily. Dark skinned people get little D3 from the sun.

It does, but it also inhibits healing and growth, and plays hell with the gums. Our primary doctor is one of the top implantologists in the world, having developed some of the primary implant systems and demonstrated that implants can actually have bone/implant integration to the point where a jaw can be re-generated and the new bone grows around and through the implant at the molecular level. He will NOT do any implants on smokers because of healing issues. . . Smokers can take between two to four times longer to heal which adds to chances of complications and failure of the implant.

After care is complicated by smokers and our implants include patient's lifetime aftercare of the implant.

Ended up having a liver ultrasound which confirmed I have a fatty liver. Nothing I can do about it, it just is what it is. At least we now know why my liver counts are a little high and it's not because of the Lipitor.

The best supplements for the liver are Alpha Lipoic Acid 300 mg, Milk Thistle Extract 300 mg, Selenium 200 mcg. And doubling this dosing has been effective in regenerating livers that may be I need of transplant. This higher dosing has also worked effectively in dealing with Hepatitis C.

Additionally, to repair damaged livers Dandelion Root and high dosing with Vitamin C can be very beneficial.

What about rinsing with a solution of lugols? If Cl kills them I will too.

I am not sure what "lugols" is. . . but we recommend rinsing once or twice a week with a dilute solution of 20 to 1 H2O to Clorox™ (use only the brand name Clorox™ with the blue cap, no other, as we know that is made to pure standards). This must be made everyday you use it as it does not keep, degrading in minutes to salt water. The best way to make it is to pour one cap full of Clorox™ into a glass, and then 20 caps of water.

Rinse and gargle with the resulting mixture for about twenty seconds or more. It won't taste very good, sort of like strong swimming pool water, but it won't hurt you, and you will get used to it.

If you swallow any, don't worry, it changes instantly to salt water before it gets to your stomach.

Throw out any that is left. . .

OH, MY GOD! Clorox has just CHANGED all the formulas for CLOROX!!!!! They have tossed out the good old stand-by that has been a century old and replaced it with JUNK New formula with adulterations!!! They are also using the SAME COLOR CAP ON EVERY VARIETY!!!!!! They've thrown the baby out with the bathwater. I would NOT, REPEAT NOT!!! use any CLOROX product for hygienic use on the human body until further notice!!!!!

I’ve been on Pravachol for 25 years

My muscles are fine

I work as much or more than any freeper

Go go go

All over America 150,000 miles a year tending to business

Sexual capacity no different than 35 and I’m 57

I am aware some folks can’t tolerate statins

But I do and so do plenty others

80mg a day

It will definitely lower total and bad cholesterol

The latest studies show that people with high-choesterol live LONGER than those with lower.

Sorry but incorrect.

The Framingham study did just that and while the study began in 1948 it started publishing it’s results in 1951. Nothing “latest studies” about it. It showed that persons with high cholesterol AFTER THE AGE OF FIFTY suffered less heart events than those in the lower range.

Statin hysteria

As you are likely well aware by your username patients typically know quite soon if they tolerate statins

Muscle pain if it’s gonna happen strikes in days...weeks at most

Pravachol lowered my total cholesterol from 235 to 150 and my LDL ..the bad for lurkers....from 150 or so to the 70s

And triglycerides fell accordingly

Unfortunately statins don’t raise HDL....Much anyhow

Diet and exercise

Genetics play a big role

Freepers love opine

There are new results studies which I am referring to. . . They are still analyzing data on people with high cholesterol. . . and there ARE new data they are incorporating. The one I recall came out about six months ago.
