WASHINGTON Debbie Houlberg, 53, snagged a selfie with Sen. Ted Cruz after his Value Voters Summit speech. It was her first up close experience with her favorite GOP candidate.
He can get up and talk from his heart, without reading from a teleprompter. He is not just acting. It is really what he feels, said Houlberg. He knows his stuff and has an inner conviction of the truth.
Cruzs call for a flat tax and abolishing the IRS resonated with Houlberg, an interior designer from Atlanta.
My husband and I actually make quite a bit of money, but so much of our money was going to taxes, she said. We work really hard and want to make sure that the people that are in control are using our money wisely and being good stewards. He would be.
David Serenda, 46, has supported Cruz since his 2013 filibuster, and his role in a government shutdown in an attempt to defund Obamacare.
He is a consistent conservative. He has not committed a sin against conservative values, Serenda said, contrasting Cruz with other contenders. He is a principled conservative and stood up to Washington, and stood up to corruption in his own party. That takes a high level of boldness.
Candidates whove never held elected office have led the GOP field: Donald Trump, Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina between them have drawn about half of all support from voters. But Serenda, a homemaker from Baltimore, said its too risky to support anyone unproven in elected office given Cruz an edge among the outsiders.
There is a move to vote for an outsider. My issue is how do we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are going to stand on principle and have the courage to stand alone? Serenda...

Trump’s tax plan is supposed to be coming out shortly.
Will be interesting to see what he comes up with.
Cruz has impressed me quite a bit. He’s the kind of candidate I’m looking for.
This is something I can't believe someone would actually say, who considers themself to be a Conservative.
It sends the message only career politicians need apply.
Say what? No freakin way.
We want people from the private sector who have had to deal with problems related to building businesses, dealing with regulations, dealing with taxation, dealing with the EPA and other regulatory agencies.
Ideally, we want only private sector people to come, serve a few terms, and go back to the private sector.

GO TED!!
I am still supporting Ted for the Vice President slot. There are things I like about him. I think he has the potential to be a very good leader. Here are some problems for me.
His vote in the Senate to reduce by half the number of Senators who had to approve of the Iran deal to pass, angered me. He said he didn’t approve of the agreement, then made it easier to approve of.
His vote on support legislation for the TPP went against his claim that he was against it.
There are two contemporary issues where Ted went against his word to us.
Thirdly, he wants to at least triple the H1-B visas. He says he wants this because H1-B people come here and spark ingenuity and thereby increase jobs.
Ted should know that these visas have been abused in contemporary times. Our people train them, and then are replaced by them because businesses can cut their payrolls.
How is this helping spark new jobs? It isn’t. It’s directly killing jobs.
Ted speaks with a forked tongue, just like the rest of them do. I’m still hanging in there, but I’ve got the guy on a short leash.
I don’t care for this sort of behavior one bit. If there were another Conservative out there running, Cruz would be off my list completely.
How large a part of the Republican base are the values voters?

I wish Ted could just get some traction. Yeah, Trump is kicking the “media’s” (the Other Democrats) ass but Ted is kicking the corrupt politicians’ asses. Go Ted!
He has traction with grassroots. They treat him like a rock star.
