Donald Trump is in an all-out attack against a surging new rival — and he just fired back

Real-estate developer Donald Trump is now frequently attacking a presidential rival he mostly refrained from criticizing in the past: Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida).

During a Thursday morning CNN interview, Trump hit Rubio as a "kid" in a wide-ranging critique.

He first bashed Rubio's credibility as a foreign-policy wonk when asked to compare their knowledge about Syria.

"Marco Rubio sits behind a desk sometimes and he reads stuff," Trump said, according to CNN's transcript. "That's all he does. I create jobs all day long. I'll know more about all of this than all of them put together and believe me, we'll have a winning strategy. If Marco Rubio is good, how come we're doing so badly?"

Trump went on to dismiss the 44-year-old senator's age.

"These guys don't know how to win," he said. "Marco Rubio, he's like a kid. He shouldn't even be running in this race, as far as I'm concerned. He's a kid."

Later in the interview, Trump again called Rubio a "kid" and criticized him for not deferring his candidacy to Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor.

"He's a kid. He has no right — I mean, frankly, he was very disloyal to Bush," Trump said. "Bush was his mentor. And everyone said he'd never run because Bush was his mentor. Well, the fact that Bush was his mentor didn't stop this young guy who is overly ambitious from wanting to run. Now Bush looks foolish and he looks like he's a very disloyal guy, frankly."

Earlier in the day during a "Morning Joe" interview, Trump also mocked Rubio for perspiring during last week's presidential debate.

“Rubio stabbed the TEA party in the back”

You got that right. It was not 2 weeks after Rubio got elected that I heard him in an interview saying he didn’t know if he was really a tea partier or not.

I’m not so sure it’s his age as much as his looks. He looks younger than he is. I doubt Trump actually knew how old Rubio is when he said that.

As for his knowledge of Syria and foreign policy, Rubio is on the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
I have never heard him say anything on foreign affairs that I didn’t think was accurate and I agree with probably 95% of it.

Great point. Chuck Schumer politically undressed Rubio in public & made a fool out of him.

Trump did good. Glad he is on America's side.

And this is why he will be POTUS.

He can’t continue the ‘low insults’ into the actual primary season when issues and positions are discussed.
That’ll be in about a month.

A year of an election is plenty.
Now it’s entirely a media ‘show’.

Trump being ahead shouldn’t be taking on all challengers like this. No need to fight everyone else at once. No need to give the opponent the publicity undeserved. At this point he should be mostly sticking to political ideas and trying to limit getting into the personal. Criticize on ideas, not the loyal or not to Bush junk.

That is very true. It will be fun to see if Trump can adapt or if he goes down the tubes. : )

What’s the difference between Christ and Rubio?

The intellectual dreg depths you'll go simply to defend your man is truly astonishing in a bot like way. The main difference between Rubio and Christ is that establishment Crist had the support of McConnell and Boehner and Trump, while Rubio did not.

Has Rubio been a turn coat? Absolutely. But without Rubio beating Crist, who knows, does Mike Lee even run? Does Ted Cruz even run? Rubio was the first real tea party victory over the GOP e. Yes, he's stabbed the TP in the back since - I get it - but he did show that an insurgent could beat a powerful establishment figure, even a powerful establishment figure with Donald Trumps money.

There is something about Rubio I don’t trust. Trump is hitting the right target. Hit him on amnesty!

He was interviewed by Fox a couple of days ago. Did a fairly good job on the foreign policy stuff...obviously very knowledgeable, however, almost too much so. His answers, IMO, came off too fast and scripted...stump speech type and I know they only have a few minutes to get the words out. However, what really irked me was when posed with the question about voter’s upsetness over the ineptitude of Congress, especially in light of the House and Senate victories over the last two cycles, he said something to the effect, well, that’s why we need the White House. I’m so sick of hearing that. If you didn’t fight in the House and totally capitulate in the Senate, what makes us think even if there was a total majority, the Repubs would still fight for strong, Conservative legislation and getting rid of the onerous legislation? What’s the point of having the power if you’re not going to use it for the betterment of the country? Just to line their pockets?

I am thoroughly disillusioned with all politicians.

Over the years, one “rising Tea Party star” after another has either fallen or willingly jumped into the DC swamp.

Whenever I hear about the next rising star I just roll my eyes and wait for the inevitable.

Yes, but it has worked so far. Why not continue if it has been successful. Being on the offense like he has has kept the others on the defense and made them very uncomfortable and have to change their positions...multiple times showing how weak and ineffective they are (see Gov. Walker).

Trump is an outstanding talent and is very smart. Trump without a doubt will be great for the economy, national defence, states rights and reducing the size of the federal government.
