Conservatives swing into lead, close in on majority government, new poll suggests [Canada]

...With less than a month to go in the campaign, and heading into the first of three leaders debates, the Tories have moved ahead of their rivals with the support of 35.4 per cent of voters, according to the Ekos poll conducted for Montreal’s La Presse newspaper....

“If (the Conservatives) keep those numbers up they’re very close to a majority — if not there already,” said pollster Frank Graves. “The numbers are about as good as we had for the final weekend of polling (in the 2011 election) when they achieved their majority.”...

Trudeau’s Liberals have committed to infrastructure spending that would result in three years of deficits...

Graves said the NDP’s commitment in the campaign to keep the books in the black may be “adding legitimacy to Harper’s claims that this is an important achievement.”

The poll results now show the Conservatives with clear leads in British Columbia, Alberta, the Prairie provinces and in Ontario, where 38.7 per cent of respondents are backing the Tories compared to 30.3 per cent for the Liberals and 19.9 per cent for the NDP....

The Conservatives have staked out a strong position in the case of a Muslim woman who challenged a government edict that she must remove her niqab in order to take part in a Canadian citizenship ceremony. The federal rule was struck down in court, but the Tories intend to appeal the decision and have pledged to bring in a new law if they are re-elected.

Harper has also taken a go-slow approach to the Syrian refugee crisis, balancing the need to help with the need to ensure the security of the country. Provinces, municipalities and individual benefactors have come forward to complain about federal foot-dragging, but Graves said the cautious approach has paid off with the Tory base....

For those outside Canada, the Toronto Star is about as hard-left as you can get, and they hate Harper's guts ... so for them to admit he's within reach of another majority is a big deal.

For the last month or so, Big Leftist Media here (especially the CBC) have been trying to portray Harper's conservatives as badly trailing losers about to be kicked to the curb by voters.

Not so fast, this poll says ... plus it helps that the Liberals are led by an inexperienced idiot (Trudeau Jr.) and Canada's biggest province - Ontario - is led by an incompetent Liberal lesbian that everyone despises. Plus the NDP's siding with the Muslims is not helping them.

Tories looking better each day!

BTW generally in a three-party race, 38-40% support will get you a majority in Parliament

so the Tories are real close now

I read an article about a month ago (I think it was from CBC’s website) that said that the Tories might have a chance at picking up a few seats in Quebec.

Given that Quebec seems to vacillate between the Bloc and the Liberals, picking up even a fe seats there might be good.

The lack of effort by Obama and the world in fighting Islamic radicals has caused a major backlash against all of Obama's people, his fellow Muslims.

Gosh, I miss Canada at times like this.

See what happens when Wayne Gretzky endorses a Conservative leader?

Quebec is a true enigma ... on social issues, they’re as left-wing as you can imagine, supporting homo marriage, going easy on criminals, subsidized daycare, legalization of weed, etc ....

but on “patriotic” issues like removing a niqab for a driver’s-license photo, they’re as right-wing as anybody on FR. And a lot of Quebecers have a real problem with militant muslims, truly viewing them as a threat.

So Harper will have some support in Quebec.

That pretty much mirrors how the native French are.

The Conservatives will probably win another majority... and Ontario will bring in English Canada.

With the added seats in Western Canada brought in by the last redistribution law, the outcome of the election is no longer in doubt

We took a vacation in upper Manitoba a few weeks back. Those I talked to were very conservative. I could see little difference between their political attitude and mine. We talked to a lot of people, and found no lefties. Had a real good political conversation with a little Alberta girl, she really knew her stuff, in that socialism just takes away from workers like herself to give to the worthless, along with having programs that reduce jobs. Had a similar conversation with a construction trucker, he is fed up and wants change.

So regarding the title, I can see where the Canadian conservatives could win if the whole country thinks like those in Manitoba.

The divide happens when you go from rural to urban.... same as in the States. Even larger cities in Alberta have their hotbeds of leftists.

I was just remarking the other day to a fellow in my office that Harper has had a much better spring to his step since the last leader’s debate. Although Mulcair performed ok, it basically finished Trudeau off in my opinion.....at least I can’t imagine how even the most ardent Liberals could vote for somebody that conducted himself like he was a grade 9 kid. Brings new meaning to the term ‘a yippy yappy little kid’.

Your experience indicates an important shift. Historically Manitoba and particularly Winnipeg has been a hotbed of left wing Socialist activism.

We’ve been to Winnipeg a few times, but not for about 20 years or so. We typically hang out in the Brandon up to Flin Flon area. Many of the towns in that area have fewer than a couple hundred people. So with regard to your remark that Manitoba is historically lefty, could it be similar to Colorado?

By that I mean Denver (a huge city that can out vote the rest of the state)is a hot bed of lefties, where as outer Colorado you will find plenty of conservatives. Or Illinois, Chicago being the waste dump, and southern Illinois having fairly decent people? Those huge metro areas out voting the rest of the state could be what’s going on with Manitoba and Winnipeg. Just a guess.

We also bought a home in Saskatchewan eons ago and had it moved south of the border. The sales guys up there had little good to say of the Canadian fed govt. In particular they hated Bombardier, as they said too much federal money was pumped into them just to keep them going. I will say BRP makes good stuff, we own three of their products.

ThreeHundredEight has been around a long time and they are as accurate as it gets in polling.
