But for those who are violent, a danger to themselves or others, we need to get them off the street before they can terrorize our communities. This is just common sense.

You have an idea what this is? Here's a hint: Jimmy Carter got rid of them.

I notice he doesn't give alternatives to putting people in jail with mandatory sentences. So is his solution to execute them?

Nor does he give alternatives for people with mental issues. At least that I saw.

National Right to Carry sounds good to me. And Project Exile doesn’t sound that bad.

I have mixed feelings about National Conceal Carry. I am not sure how it would work. Shouldn’t it remain with the states? 2nd Amendment Foundation has been making great strides in this area.

You know what happens when the Fedgov gets its nose under the tent.

For the other program, I am more interested in hearing what cuts he will make, not new programs.

Donald, don’t be a bernie.

Jazz wrote last year on the New York SAFE Act which saw people lose their right to own guns without a hearing. While Trump isn’t promoting this...

Why is he bringing it up then? Trump isn't promoting it and he spoke out against the SAFE act.

In any case, according to the American Psychiatric Association, “96% of people with serious mental illnesses never act violently.”

The APA has about as much credibility as the AMA... which is close to zero. But if that stat is to be believed, then out of, say, 1 million seriously mentally ill people only 40,000 will act violently? Comforting.

Virtually all of the latest mass shootings are done by mentally ill.

While Trump isn’t promoting this, he is agreeing with Dewey Cornell of the Virginia Youth Violence Project who told USA Today “society” has to be protected from the mentally ill.

I would invite Taylor Millard to take a stroll threw Downtown Los Angeles sometime. You routinely encounter wild-eyed men and women who are homeless and who, as they walk the streets, scream out epithets to invisible people no one else can see. When you watch these people roaming the streets, you can see other people looking down when they encounter them in order to avoid making eye contact with them for fear of what might happen if they lock eyes with them.

I hate the idea of forcibly detaining people who have not committed a crime. But is it really the right thing to do, to let people who are obviously mentally ill wander the streets having to fend for themselves like stray dogs.

Just look in your local paper for the “penalties” handed out on conviction for violent crimes involving guns in your community.

It is probation or very little time in jail (not prison, there is a difference).

With no real penalty, why not use a gun if you are a criminal?

Overall it’s a damn good position paper.

What’s Hot Air’s position or I should say what’s Salem Media’s position? Oh yeah, they don’t like Trump.

From what I see Trump’s position is taken word for word from the NRA.

Hot Air: “Mixed bag”

Do I even have to say it?

Libertarians believe we shouldn’t criminals behind bars and we shouldn’t seek the commitment of crazy people.

They are exactly the things we need to do more of and as a conservative, I believe the first responsibility of government is to protect society.

This is why I back the Trump platform. I’m not anti-government; I’m for government fulfilling its core responsibility to assure the public safety - without it, we don’t have a decent and law-abiding society.

Absolutely FASCINATING that hotair is opposed to enforcing existing gun laws as a way of putting away violent and dangerous criminals. Guess that’s because Trump wants to do that, hey
