A high school student in Texas whose hobby is inventing thought he had a great idea for a project: to build his own clock.
The effort landed him in handcuffs and juvenile detention on Monday, accused of making a hoax bomb.
The detention of Ahmed Mohamed, 14, a student at MacArthur High School in Irving, Tex., near Dallas, generated a national furor even after the police said on Wednesday that he would not be charged as questions arose about whether he was targeted because of his religion.
The episode even came to the attention of the nations top leaders, who deplored the treatment of the young man. Cool clock, Ahmed, President Obama said on Twitter. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. Its what makes America great.
Mr. Obamas staff went on to invite Ahmed to come to the White House for Astronomy Night, to be held Oct. 19, an event bringing together scientists, engineers, astronauts, teachers and students to spend an evening stargazing from the South Lawn. The presidents spokesman held out the encounter as a case study in unreasoned prejudice in an era when the country is fighting Islamic terrorism at home and in the Middle East. Shortly before a news conference Wednesday outside his home in Irving, Ahmed still wearing the NASA shirt he wore when he was detained waved to a thick crowd of reporters from the doorway as his family brought out pizzas and drinks for the media. Ahmed said he was considering transferring out of MacArthur High and had indeed accepted President Obamas invitation

The people on Free Republic bending over backwards to excuse this away is frightening.
This was the comic book version. They smart when your life in their hands - well lets say deadly.
They forgot 9/11 2001, the foot bomber, the underwear bomber, etc etc.
Mayday! Mayday! Deport! Deport!
“This was a test to see what they can get away with.”
Heartening to know the excuse-making, and turning of blind eyes went all the way up to the Oval Orifice, eh?
Yeah, so the arrest was over-the-top, but some time with local LEO discussing cultural relevance, and the stupidity of bringing bomb-lookin’ thingies to a public school, and then LYING about them when asked direct questions...DEFINITELY. Everyone’s got the potential to do mostly harmless, if not exactly smart things, and ending up with an arrest record and in the Federal pen isn’t “the answer.” There’s one stunt I pulled in 1983 with a buddy at my H.S.; done today it’d have got me in a heap o’crap with Homeland Security. So, there’s that factor in this equation, too.
And his jewel of a father...WHEW! What a rotting codfish HE is! Makes you wonder if this whole blow-it-off exercise is to keep him chill so he won’t get antsy, and run off where Federal eyes would have a hard time tracking him.
This stunt probably was pulled to make a smokescreen.
The authorities likely will avoid him now.
If you were "prepping" your school to accept something as "normal", then you certainly would:
1. Setup such a device.
2. Bring it to school.
3. Plug it in and "Show" it to the Teacher, and assure Him/Her that you were sensitive to the fact that you didn't want to make it look like a bomb.
4. Don't answer queries about it because your Daddy didn't/couldn't prepare you for an Adult's queries, so suggested to just be "evasive".
5. Disregard directions to put it away until you could take it home, and instead, show it around school so as may people as possible would see you and your "clock" as just a part of school "scenery".
6. Once normalcy of you carrying around your "clock" was reached, it would be simple to actually carry a fully armed "clock" anywhere into the school (say the quad during lunchtime).
If anyone doesn't believe that a 14 year old Moslem wouldn't blow himself (and as many others as possible) up, hasn't been paying attention.
He would be an instant Martyr in the Moslem world.
I fear something very bad is coming to America, and a school full of kids is one of the likely places where it will arrive.
I give discostu the benefit of the doubt, but I don't believe he fully realizes that America's enemies are within our border, that they are relentless, and that they will fully take advantage of our laws and good nature, and sacrifice their children, to destroy us.
You don’t answer questions because:
A - only idiots answer questions from the police without their lawyer present
B - he’s a teenager.
Meanwhile it is obviously a clock. And EVERYBODY knew that. If anybody thought it was a bomb then why didn’t they evacuate? And he’s leaving the school, so the idea that he was “prepping” them has just been proven ridiculous.
