Ahmed Mohamed, 14, Builds Clock, Is Cuffed for Bomb Hoax, and Ends Up Invited to White House
NY Times ^ | SEPT. 16, 2015 | PETER BAKER and CHRISTINE HAUSER

A high school student in Texas whose hobby is inventing thought he had a great idea for a project: to build his own clock.

The effort landed him in handcuffs and juvenile detention on Monday, accused of making a hoax bomb.

The detention of Ahmed Mohamed, 14, a student at MacArthur High School in Irving, Tex., near Dallas, generated a national furor even after the police said on Wednesday that he would not be charged as questions arose about whether he was targeted because of his religion.

The episode even came to the attention of the nation’s top leaders, who deplored the treatment of the young man. “Cool clock, Ahmed,” President Obama said on Twitter. “Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.”

Mr. Obama’s staff went on to invite Ahmed to come to the White House for Astronomy Night, to be held Oct. 19, an event bringing together scientists, engineers, astronauts, teachers and students to spend an evening stargazing from the South Lawn. The president’s spokesman held out the encounter as a case study in unreasoned prejudice in an era when the country is fighting Islamic terrorism at home and in the Middle East. Shortly before a news conference Wednesday outside his home in Irving, Ahmed — still wearing the NASA shirt he wore when he was detained — waved to a thick crowd of reporters from the doorway as his family brought out pizzas and drinks for the media. Ahmed said he was considering transferring out of MacArthur High and had indeed accepted President Obama’s invitation

"This is really irking me. He didn’t “build a clock”. He took apart a clock radio and made something that looked like a bomb."

Exactly. This is a homemade clock:

What that kid did was just plugging sh!t into a circuit board.

It was initially closed, plugged in, buzzing, and the kid lied to the teacher about it initially.

Does it smell of a test run to you?

....”well then we’re LIABLE” or some similar BS”....

Exactly...anything to avoid a lawsuit...which on one hand you can’t blame them...people use anything to sue today and regardless of how idiotic they look doing so. People have no shame today..it’s every man for himself.

Same response I had.
“Say, that looks like the training aid they had for us.”

Oh yeah.
Heck, the one guy tried to sue them after getting caught selling the goods on Ebay.
Seems he felt threatened or some such?

Sort of a "Flying Imam" approach IMO.

I remember him.
I also recall the guy with the fusion reaction in his garage.

This...this guy doesn’t strike me as being at all in their league.
It does look like a test run to me.
And if something does happen in the future, we can be certain we won’t hear much about it or anything accurate.

Here’s gonna be my last on this because really we’re never going to convince each other.

Remember a long long time ago (the late 70s I think, maybe early 80s) when legend has it some kid made an a-bomb (less fissionable material of course) for the science fair? I don’t know if it ever actually happened (Google is not helpful on this) but it was a solid urban legend that ran around the dork set (that would be me and my friends) for a long time. And we all thought it was really cool, not because if somebody added the material he could have blown $#@% up, but because he figured it out.

Among the dork set figuring it out, gadgeting it, taking it apart, kit bashing it, was the holy grail. I had a friend in high school who lost 50% of his hearing on his right side when he made a gun from scratch. How’d he lose his hearing people would ask, because he wasn’t dumb enough to look at it when he test fired it. Now he wasn’t going to do anything with the gun, he just wanted to apply things he’d read and learned. I’ve got another friend that had to do the egg experiment, rig up something so an egg can be dropped from the back of the football stadium onto the tennis courts and not break, he thought that was boring, whipped up some contact explosive, blew the egg up. Failed the assignment, but it was cool. That’s what we did. Take it apart, put it together different, see what happens. We weren’t hurting anybody, even if we were making guns and explosives, it was pre-columbine, sometimes we’d get scolded, but the scolding always came with the “and that was impressive, you just shouldn’t do that without supervision”.

I see me and my classmates in this kid. We did this stuff. We had fun doing it. And yeah his clock could be a bomb, because ANY clock could be a bomb. I could turn the cheap digital clock I’ve fixed multiple times into a bomb AND leave it in its original case so you’d never know until it was too late. If he wanted to blow somebody he would have. I don’t think he wanted to. I think he was just playing with electronics. Because electronics are fun.

In this time frame when we worry about kids avoiding STEM careers, when we think 2 whole generations are getting dumber, freaking out because some kid messed with a clock is counter productive. Think about it another way: he probably wasn’t watching the Kardashians while he did this.

Well he did have to do some squeezing to fit 4 cubic inch device into a 3 cubic inch space if I have correct info. You are correct as to questioning the boy being a genius. My older son when he was about 2 years old took a large toy and turned it into something the size of a cereal box. I always thought he had the right stuff to be a junk dealer but he did a lot better in life. The boy being talked about should be given a camel.

You’re talking about the Radioactive Boy Scout.
It wasn’t an a-bomb.
It was a small reactor.
And guess what, it looked nothing like a suitcase bomb.
And he didn’t plug it in during Englsih class.
Didn’t lie about it.
And didn’t have a bomb scare!
