Ahmed Mohamed, 14, Builds Clock, Is Cuffed for Bomb Hoax, and Ends Up Invited to White House
NY Times ^ | SEPT. 16, 2015 | PETER BAKER and CHRISTINE HAUSER

A high school student in Texas whose hobby is inventing thought he had a great idea for a project: to build his own clock.

The effort landed him in handcuffs and juvenile detention on Monday, accused of making a hoax bomb.

The detention of Ahmed Mohamed, 14, a student at MacArthur High School in Irving, Tex., near Dallas, generated a national furor even after the police said on Wednesday that he would not be charged as questions arose about whether he was targeted because of his religion.

The episode even came to the attention of the nation’s top leaders, who deplored the treatment of the young man. “Cool clock, Ahmed,” President Obama said on Twitter. “Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It’s what makes America great.”

Mr. Obama’s staff went on to invite Ahmed to come to the White House for Astronomy Night, to be held Oct. 19, an event bringing together scientists, engineers, astronauts, teachers and students to spend an evening stargazing from the South Lawn. The president’s spokesman held out the encounter as a case study in unreasoned prejudice in an era when the country is fighting Islamic terrorism at home and in the Middle East. Shortly before a news conference Wednesday outside his home in Irving, Ahmed — still wearing the NASA shirt he wore when he was detained — waved to a thick crowd of reporters from the doorway as his family brought out pizzas and drinks for the media. Ahmed said he was considering transferring out of MacArthur High and had indeed accepted President Obama’s invitation

Except it’s not a metal brief case. It’s a pencil case:

My wife’s got one.

Most citizens who love this country appreciate ALL security people. The ones in Warehouses and the like ARE the “Front line” as far as I’m concerned.

I worked in a Jewelry dept. and we found correspondence on a note in arabic type writing as well as english, which was inside (Hidden underneath the insert) of a small “returned” Jewelry box.

This was handed to security who then notified the state police who took it from there.

I would learn later the information was significant enough to be investigated further though they would not of course reveal how.

Which looks nothing like a clock, and has no business being plugged in during English class to emit noise which then gets LIED ABOUT sparking a bomb scare.

So far the worst I have to deal with is site management tying our hands so that we can’t respond properly to anything.
So employees walked off with near 300k in product from inside because we are not allowed to search vehicles.
So the site blamed us instead of themselves and their idiotic policy on letting these vehicles inside the truck yard.
That was fun!

The father of the Muslim teenager, who was arrested for bringing a homemade clock to school, is a Sudanese immigrant who went from selling New York City hot dogs to twice running for president in his native country.

It looks exactly like every single digital clock I’ve ever disassembled. Again, you probably have one in your house, get a phillips head screw driver and see for yourself.

“It looks exactly like every single digital clock I’ve ever disassembled.”

What do you think suitcase bombs are?
What do you think the parts are taken from?

I can appreciate your frustration with management. Though I was a clerk we had some real aggressive security people who ‘loved catching bad guys’, who would get my assistance when they were doing a pat down of female thieves. I got to see and talk with them alot about their work and all the “regulations” that tie their hands. ...so you’re right...many do get away with merchandise and various other things that could otherwise nail them with if their hands weren’t tied.

EVERYTHING obama does either:
a) Weakens America/Americans
b) Distances America's allies
c) Strengthens America's enemies
d) Attacks Christianity
e) Serves islam
f) Harms Israel
Or some combination of the above.

There are NO counter examples.

Vastly rewarding the water tester/defences prober/desensitizer definitely serves islam...

People do. But they shouldn’t. Both the times I fixed that clock not only did it save me money, but time. Taking it apart and fixing it and putting it back together took less time than driving to Target and buying a new one. And it means I got to see how a clock works and can clearly identify everything in the pencil case as standard digital clock parts.

Edmunds Scientific is nice. But WAY more expensive. This was at most a $20 clock and $10 pencil case. And it’s more fun to work it out yourself from scratch.

The worst one we have at my site is that we are not allowed to call police without management’s say so.
If they tell us “no”, we get to sit by and be useless.
Their “reason” has something to do with “well then we’re LIABLE” or some similar BS.
They always point to the liability underwriter.

And I am telling you, this was not a clock.
This was a test to see what they can get away with.

Am I the only one who finds it highly suspicious that a muslim teenager would bring a clock to school?

For what purpose? Was this for a classroom assignment or something? (I haven't heard that it was...)

So why does a muslim teenager bring a clock, with wires openly hanging out of it, to school?

TEST RUN.

Watching facebook, google etc.. tripping themselves sending invitations to this kid just really turns me off. The fact that Obama invited him to the White House doesn't surprise me at all. Obama loves muslims and hates America.

No, you’re not alone.
But we do have some rather odd posters who insist we are unfair to little Ahmed..
Keep reading along, you’ll see them.

If the briefcase was already opened I would have given the kid a B on his science project because his wire management sucks.

If the briefcase was closed and he lawyered up with an attitude I’d sent in a andros mk 6 robot, x-rayed the briefcase to determine if a trembler / anti-motion device was in the circuitry then pick it up with the robot then move it to a prepared sand bagged firing point on the playground an remotely open it with a dearmer shot of antifreeze.... then return to the junk in the sun to determine if indeed it was an IED or not an either give the evidence to the police or the janitor......

I think from information provided school over reacted ...... personal opinion.

Obama’s still an asshole !

Stay Safe !!

Thanks. I say give the kid a pound of Semtex and see if he’s as good as he thinks he is.
