A high school student in Texas whose hobby is inventing thought he had a great idea for a project: to build his own clock.
The effort landed him in handcuffs and juvenile detention on Monday, accused of making a hoax bomb.
The detention of Ahmed Mohamed, 14, a student at MacArthur High School in Irving, Tex., near Dallas, generated a national furor even after the police said on Wednesday that he would not be charged as questions arose about whether he was targeted because of his religion.
The episode even came to the attention of the nations top leaders, who deplored the treatment of the young man. Cool clock, Ahmed, President Obama said on Twitter. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. Its what makes America great.
Mr. Obamas staff went on to invite Ahmed to come to the White House for Astronomy Night, to be held Oct. 19, an event bringing together scientists, engineers, astronauts, teachers and students to spend an evening stargazing from the South Lawn. The presidents spokesman held out the encounter as a case study in unreasoned prejudice in an era when the country is fighting Islamic terrorism at home and in the Middle East. Shortly before a news conference Wednesday outside his home in Irving, Ahmed still wearing the NASA shirt he wore when he was detained waved to a thick crowd of reporters from the doorway as his family brought out pizzas and drinks for the media. Ahmed said he was considering transferring out of MacArthur High and had indeed accepted President Obamas invitation

Good. You are wonderful. Sorry to bother you, dinodino.
Yep. You are correct. Thanks.
Screw you again for calling me a liar. I sure as hell hope you aren’t involved in any way with schooling children.
Good.
Who mistake movie prop 'bombs' created for dramatic effect, with being a genuine IED, not many of which are made with external digital clock displays.
I wonder if the hysterical (female) teachers tune in regularly to Nancy Grace (on the Hysterical Ladies Network).
Then again, our culture, particularly in public school setting, has long been programmed to over-react, and err on the side of caution, reacting to merest impressions.
Thoughts are dangerous things for children to be exposed to...pop-tarts with one corner bitten off can look like a gun. omg, omg, omg...(the hysterical ladies get semi-hysterical in disapproval).
Every little boy knows what a 'gun' looks like. I remember shooting lots of people with broomsticks and tree branches, in addition to the finger-pointed, blazingly fast five-finger six gun. I always had at least two of those with me...
We also used to have bb gun "wars" where we roamed all over the neighborhood trying to outflank and sneak up on each other, to shoot each other with real bb guns (the low power type).
More seriously, I think the kid was just trying to show people how 'smart' he was, since he doesn't speak all that well, so wanted to show off "hey, look at me, I can "make" something" --- then still get's a blank look on his face, and doesn't quite get it when people are not all that impressed with him (not as impressed with him as he would like).
He doesn't seem to understand where others are "at". He comes across as being a little bit socially awkward.
It seems to me that it's likely the kid lives in his own bubble, focusing most centrally upon his own thoughts. What 14-16 old boy isn't that way?
Add in being 'soft' looking, not exactly athletic, but still wanting to be liked, wanting to be respected (who doesn't want those things?) but may be able to do simple enough electronics assembly in a plug this in to that level, even though it appears he has some difficulty relating to others, and verbally expressing himself.
Very well put.
These bitches nee to be horsewhipped.
I wouldn't go that far. Although I hate to admit to it (since it would expose my male perspective sexism) --- the hysterical ladies could maybe stand a good & thorough *boinking* to help get their minds right. [8^')
In this one school, put the science teacher in charge of evaluating security threats, though...
Yours is a more rational and proportional approach.
But. I’d like to hear the hysterical educrats scream in pain for all of the damage they’re causing.
Yeah, I hear that.
It's like it's almost too late...and there are too many participants, too many small little instances which then add up to things being made into the pc mess it presently is.
Too many William Ayers, in too many positions of influence.
Now, if he and his wife were to be horse-whipped, that could be something I would not caution against, other than --- don't stop, and don't get caught.
No it was a clock that got moved to a more interesting case. All the “bomb” talk is just stupid. Real bomb makers don’t put big count down clocks on them, that’s pure Hollywood balderdash.
Ask anyone who rides a bus in Israel how serious a suitcase bomb is.
Google “mohammed elhassan mohammed”... he is making all of the “mistreated fo his color and religion” claims. Someone on this thread said he is an activist muslim. He is not being quiet.
This is really irking me. He didn’t “build a clock”. He took apart a clock radio and made something that looked like a bomb.
Sounds like his family shouldn’t have come to an awful, awful country such as ours. Maybe they should move.
I don’t see where this is mentioned as an assignment. He did it on his own, and bought it in to “show it off”, and it went off during class? He has been suspended for 3 days by the school, and the school isn’t backing down to media pressure. That says a lot.
One story I read says that his father returned to Sudan to run for President of Sudan. Huh?
Is he still there? He shoulda taken the little clockmaker with him.
He's a Sudanese immigrant who has twice declared himself a presidential candidate in Sudan. When Florida pastor Terry Jones put the Quran on trial and later burned it in 2012, Mohamed was the Muslim holy book's defense attorney,
ElHassan is no stranger to adversity and experienced hardship firsthand, and during his lifetime has cultivated a deep sense of humanitarianism, tolerance and patience
Mohammed became proficient in all the religious sciences and has become an aficionado of prose and poetry. He attended many public events from his early age and unintentionally upstaged other expert orators in religious and political debates and remains unequalled. He is a passionate and sometimes amusing speaker of wisdom, logic and the realities of modern-day life. He possesses a deep insight into the causes of things and is dedicated to his principles.
The father set up this stunt. I'll bet a pizza and a six pack.
Why do I think Obama made this happen from the beginning.
