PIKETON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The Department of Energy has announced they are ending the American Centrifuge Test Demonstration and Operation contract at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, Ohio, according to an Ohio Congressman.

This announcement comes after 235 workers at the plant received WARN notices earlier this week saying they may be out of a job in 60 days.

At that time, Centrus Energy, which operates the facility, said the contract was set to expire on September 30, and they were hopeful to get funds to continue the cleanup project.

The Portsmouth Daily Times reports an email from Jaime Shimek of the Department of Energy dated Friday, Sept. 11, 2015 said in part – “At the direction of Congress and the U.S. interagency, the Department has been evaluating the availability of existing enriched uranium supplies for tritium production, among other options, for meeting national security needs. DOE has concluded that sufficient supplies exist to extend the date by which additional enriched uranium would be needed for national security missions.

Piketon is a very old plant, probably nearing the end of its useful life. Eventually the radioactive contamination catches up to you.

It has not been run since about a decade and a half.

The plant enriched uranium from 1954 until 2001 through a process called gaseous diffusion.

The gaseous diffusion process is no longer operational and DOE is conducting an extensive environmental cleanup of the site.

A small number of inactive facilities have been removed and remaining structures, including the gaseous diffusion process buildings and support facilities, are being considered for demolition through a project called Decontamination and Decommissioning (D&D)
