Politics and advertising are closely intertwined. Like a good advertisement, a good politician needs to present a compelling case for why the voter should check his or her box on the ballot over all the other options.
Many good ads or politicians will make a direct appeal to viewers' emotionsand of all the candidates in recent memory, Donald Trump may be the best at doing this.
While some pundits and late-night comedians have eviscerated Trumps campaign, calling it all flair and no substance, this might not matter to voters. Whether youre trying to get someone to buy a product or vote for a candidate, studies have shown that appealing to emotion is nearly twice as effective as presenting facts or appearing believable.
As academics who study what makes advertisements successful and engaging, we believe Trumps allure can be boiled down to three key factors, one of whichempowermentencourages voters to actually work on his behalf.
Emotions influence behavior
But first, some background on the current understanding of emotional response in people.
*snip*
In a world where were bombarded with stimuli, from advertisements to buzzing phones, these mechanisms influence what we pay attention to, and how we react.
Appeal is simply the degree to which we judge something to be positive or negative.Engagement is fairly self-explanatory: the extent to which an object or idea produces active or passive feelingsin other words, the level of emotional intensity it produces.
Lastlyand maybe most importantis empowerment, which is the amount of control someone feels in a given situation.

How many lines of coke did each have before explaining?
Very.Good.Article!!!
Trump is the perfect product for these times. Forget the snake oil he's selling. It's the Snake Oil Salesman that we the people want!
Ha....my theory is that all these stories about trump "this and that".....are in fact diversionary tactics (head fakes for those in Rio Linda) planted by Trump operatives....
just to keep the opposition discombobulated.
for a good example watch the film "the man who never was" on Netflex.

Cuz hes not a namby-pamby, poo-slurping, radioactive, lying collectivist sack of sh*t..?
My guess.
I enlarged that chart and couldn’t get back to the article.
Returning now to finish reading!
I had the same problem. To get back to the article from the chart, close the chart by clicking the X
Victorious.
Trump: “We’ll win so much, you’ll get bored with winning. Or maybe not.”
< How many lines of coke did each have before explaining? >
LOL!! Are we to presume you know more about coke than you sure as heck know about marketing? Whoa! LOL!
I saw it in a movie once or twice. Jen-yee did a line in Forrest Gump before she thought about jumping off the high-rise balcony.
Nope, never did coke, or ludes, or crystal or any thing like that. Too many Ancient Ancient Age whiskey sours and gin and tonics, though. No longer do that or smoke cigs either. Praise the Lord Jesus Christ!!!
My mother, our family’s token pseudo-progressive Obama reverer... likes Trump a lot, and couldn’t understand my revulsion with him.
I call it, shared indignation, I suppose that is how he makes the public feel empowerment with his message.
The cult of personality is alive and well amongst the sheeple...be they left or right.
lol
I don’t see any hyperbole involved in this article - advertising is a serious business with quantifiable results.
I think DJT naturally knows how to get where he’s going. I saw him on a circa 1980’s Oprah interview someone emailed me where he said he doesn’t quit and doesn’t ever plan to lose. I saw another time where he said “I’ve always got a chance”.
He’s his opponents worst nightmare. The Natural. And he’s way better than Bill Clinton ever thought of being because he has succeeded in the real world.
I think this election season will be studied for decades.
