The War of 1812 had been a particularly nasty conflict with the British. They had burned down the Capitol and the White House in Washington, and were set on taking the port of Baltimore, which was protected in part by Fort McHenry, just to the south. On September 7th, 1814, during the build-up to the attack on Baltimore, two Americans, Colonel John Skinner and a lawyer and part-time poet by the name of Francis Scott Key, had gone out to one of the British ships. They had come to negotiate the release of Dr William Beanes, a friend of Key who had been seized following the attack on Washington. The British agreed, but all three had learned too much about the forthcoming attack on Baltimore and so were detained by the British on board the frigate Surprise until it was over. The attack started on September 12th, 1814, and after an initial exchange of fire, the fleet withdrew to form an arc just outside the range of Fort McHenry's fire. Skinner, Beanes and Key watched much of the bombardment from the British deck. The major attack started in heavy rain on the morning of September 13th. Just under three miles in the distance the three men caught glimpses of the star-shaped fort with its huge flag - 42ft long, with 8 red stripes, 7 white stripes and 15 white stars, and specially commissioned to be big enough that the British could not possibly fail to see it from a distance. In the dark of the night of the 13th, the shelling suddenly stopped. Through the darkness they couldn't tell whether the British forces had been defeated, or the fort had fallen. As the rain cleared, and the sun began to rise, Key peered through the lifting darkness anxious to see if the flag they had seen the night before was still flying. And so it was that he scribbled on the back of an envelope the first lines of a poem he called Defense of Fort M'Henry. O, say can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming

Oh, say can you see by the dawns early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilights last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
Oer the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
Oer the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foes haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, oer the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the mornings first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
Oer the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battles confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
Oer the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the wars desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heavn rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: In God is our trust.
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
Oer the land of the free and the home of the brave!

This is the source melody for the anthem. It was the theme song of London's Anachreotic Society, a gentleman's drinking club. It was sung in an episode of AMC's series "Turn" by Abraham Woodhull and a group of drunken British officers.
"To Anachreon in Heaven"
It lacks the sharps, flats and dotted notes of the version we sing today.
Here is Rachmaninov's version.

My father was a ground-crew bomber radio mechanic on Guam in WWII. One of the few stories I got out of him about his wartime experience was when the Marines would try to mop up the Japanese positions on the north end of the island. If someone started speaking to them in English in the darkness, they would ask the speaker to sing the last verse of the Star-Spangled Banner. If he started singing it, he was shot; if he said something like, “who the hell knows the last verse!”, he was allowed to pass.

This wasn’t the first attempt to write a patriotic song to the tune “Anacreon in Heaven.” In 1798 during the Adams administration, the song “Ye Sons of Columbia” was written, all nine verses:
Ye sons of Columbia, who bravely have fought,
For those rights, which unstained from your Sires had descended,
May you long taste the blessings your valour has brought,
And your sons reap the soil which their fathers defended.
‘Mid the reign of mild Peace, May your nation increase,
With the glory of Rome, and the wisdom of Greece;
And ne’er shall the sons of Columbia be slaves,
While the earth bears a plant, or the sea rolls its waves.
In a clime, whose rich vales feed the marts of the world,
Whose shores are unshaken by Europe’s commotion,
The trident of Commerce should never be hurled,
To incense the legitimate powers of the ocean.
But should pirates invade, Though in thunder arrayed,
Let your cannon declare the free charter of trade.
For ne’er shall the sons of Columbia be slaves,
While the earth bears a plant, or the sea rolls its waves.
The fame of our arms, of our laws the mild sway,
Had justly ennobled our nation in story,
‘Till the dark clouds of faction obscured our young day,
And enveloped the sun of American glory.
But let traitors be told, Who their country have sold,
And bartered their God for his image in gold,
That ne’er shall the sons of Columbia be slaves,
While the earth bears a plant, or the sea rolls its waves.
While France her huge limbs bathes recumbent in blood,
And Society’s base threats with wide dissolution;
May Peace like the dove, who returned from the flood,
Find an ark of abode in our mild constitution
But though Peace is our aim, Yet the boon we disclaim,
If bought by our Sov’reignty, Justice or Fame.
For ne’er shall the sons of Columbia be slaves,
While the earth bears a plant, or the sea rolls its waves.
‘Tis the fire of the flint, each American warms;
Let Rome’s haughty victors beware of collision,
Let them bring all the vassals of Europe in arms,
We’re a world by ourselves, and disdain a division.
While with patriot pride, To our laws we’re allied,
No foe can subdue us, no faction divide.
For ne’er shall the sons of Columbia be slaves,
While the earth bears a plant, or the sea rolls its waves.
Our mountains are crowned with imperial oak;
Whose roots, like our liberties, ages have nourished;
But lone e’er our nation submits to the yoke,
Not a tree shall be left on the field where it flourished.
Should invasion impend, Every grove would descend,
From the hill-tops they shaded, our shores to defend.
For ne’er shall the sons of Columbia be slaves,
While the earth bears a plant, or the sea rolls its waves.
Let our patriots destroy Anarch’s pestilent worm;
Lest our Liberty’s growth should be checked by corrosion;
Then let clouds thicken round us; we heed not the storm;
Our realm fears no shock, but the earth’s own explosion.
Foes assail us in vain, Though their fleets bridge the main,
For our altars and laws with our lives we’ll maintain.
For ne’er shall the sons of Columbia be slaves,
While the earth bears a plant, or the sea rolls its waves.
Should the Tempest of War overshadow our land,
Its bolts could ne’er rend Freedom’s temple asunder;
For, unmoved, at its portal, would Washington stand,
And repulse, with his Breast, the assaults of the thunder!
His sword, from the sleep Of its scabbard would leap,
And conduct, with its point, ev’ry flash to the deep!
For ne’er shall the sons of Columbia be slaves,
While the earth bears a plant, or the sea rolls its waves.
Let Fame to the world sound America’s voice;
No intrigues can her sons from their government sever;
Her pride is her Adams; Her laws are his choice,
And shall flourish, till Liberty slumbers for ever.
Then unite heart and hand, Like Leonidas’ band,
And swear to the God of the ocean and land;
That ne’er shall the sons of Columbia be slaves,
While the earth bears a plant, or the sea rolls its waves.

Words and Actions
September 14, 2015
Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
1 John 3:18
The email from the student in my college writing class expressed urgency. It was the end of the semester, and he realized he needed a better grade to participate in sports. What could he do? He had missed some assignments, so I gave him two days to complete those papers and improve his grade. His response: Thank you. Ill do it.
Two daysand the deadlinepassed, and no papers appeared. He didnt back up his words with action.
Jesus told about a young man who did something similar. The boys dad asked him to do some work in the vineyard. The son said, I will, sir (Matt. 21:30). But he was all talk and no action.
In commenting on this parable, Matthew Henry concluded: Buds and blossoms are not fruit. The buds and blossoms of our words, which breed anticipation of what we might do, are empty without the fruit of our follow-through. Jesus main application was to religious leaders who spoke of obedience yet refused to follow through with repentance. But the words apply to us as well. It is in following God with actions and in truth (1 John 3:18)not in making empty promisesthat we honor our Lord and Savior.
Our actions in obeying God show Him more love, honor, and praise than any empty words we might say to try to appear good.
Dear Father, help me to follow through on my promises to You and to all who depend on me. Especially help me to do Your will and not just talk about it.
Words are the blossoms, action the fruit.
Matthew 21 describes several events in the life of Christ. This chapter opens with Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem (vv. 1-11) followed by the cleansing of the temple (vv. 12-17) and the cursing of the fig tree (vv. 18-22). Then the parable of the two sons follows a debate with the religious leaders about Jesus authority (vv. 23-32). It is this issue that forms the context of the parable, for it deals with how the sons responded to authority. The son who did his fathers wishes was the one who honored his father. Bill Crowder

During much of John Adams' administration, we were involved in a naval cold war with revolutionary France, and pro-British and pro-French mobs battled each other in the streets of American cities. This was why the Alien and Sedition Acts were passed.
You can see which side those lyrics fall on.

I think one of the service academies always sings the last verse. Personally, I think it the best one.
