BOONE, Iowa Donald Trump zeroed in Saturday on Republican rival Ben Carson, questioning whether he has the energy to be president, a line he has frequently used to taunt Jeb Bush.
"I don't think Ben has the energy," said Trump, before calling him a "nice man" and arguing that he is not cut out for negotiating with some foreign officials.
The attack came as Carson, a retired surgeon running an outsider campaign like Trump, has surged into second place in many surveys, behind the brash real estate mogul.
Trump, who campaigned here before heading to a tailgate party where a trio of other GOP hopefuls were also appearing, also criticized Carson for recently questioning his Christian faith.
"You don't hit a person on faith," said Trump. "I don't know him. He knows nothing about me."

Not to say Trump would or wouldn’t be a good president, but let’s all face it. This is the bench. No perfect guy on a white horse is riding in this month and not before this weeks debates which will mark the end of the beginning
We either don’t want Trump because he has some attributes of Obama, who, btw, will shortly have held the White House for eight years, or we don’t want someone that reminds us of romneymccainbushdole who remind us of Obama since they’ve enabled and supported him
It will be one or the other
Or none of them. With a lot of whining
The democrats are awful for so many serious biblically historic reasons
But we’ve always said our candidates have to jump on board wth what they’re doing right, such as gaining power
A certain Shamelessness, attacking from the right, attacking from a strong position for instance
Isn’t everyone just sick of ,’oh we can’t stop to their level, let’s let them attack us without fighting back’
Sorry. I find Ben Carson to be the most unlikely person in the running He reminds me of all the doctors I’ve worked with. So demanding of control of the situation the whole world has to go by their pace, talk about what they want to talk about, feel inferior intellectually
Nice guy but talk about being difficult to work with. No he has no energy no fire in the belly. I can not buy his poll numbers
I take it Trump is not your candidate.
You might be correct. I mean look at Trump’s long history of supporting conservative causes. Look how he went after the establishment in NY and really pushed the boundaries of American liberty. Tell me again how many millions and how much time he’s put in to conservative causes over the last four years?
I remember when he became an NRA life member and spoke at the NRA convention, don’t you?
Perhaps he stood with you in Iowa to fight for traditional marriage? Remember his massive support for Prop 8 and the millions he poured into that campaign?
How about the money he gave to the Minute Men so they could expose the cartels, Mexican Army, drug and people smuggling going on at the border? Was it ten or twenty million he donated to expose that wrong doing?
What, you say you cannot remember? Am I just making it up about Trump and his support for liberty, justice and the American way? Projection is an awful thing, but Trump knows how to do it.
Trump can say why does Hillary not wear skirts on the campaign trail? Is she trying to tell women no one would take a woman seriously in a skirt? Of course we would all know he was referring to her giant clankles.
Every other candidate knows they’re running against Hillary. Trump won’t turn his guns on her, because his guns are her guns.
Hillary’s running in the GOP primaries? Gosh, am I ever embarrassed.
[”I don’t think Ben has the energy,” said Trump]
Hell, the last time he had a televised campaign interview, that I witnessed, he was as almost catatonic.
Oh Cmon! Trump repeats ad nauseam that Hillary Clinton is the worst Sec of State that we ever had and that she is in big legal trouble and he frankly does not even think she will be the Dem nominee. Neither do I. Why waste time on a person you may never even have to run agains’t?
I guess Drumpf thinks the most qualified person to be President is someone who resembles a Tazmania Devil?
It’s a common enough mistake, especially this early in the season. Hillarys running in the GOP primaries via her stalking horse, Donald Trump (D-NY)
I like Carson, but he is so incredibly slow in his speech that I am afraid he is going to nod off.
Has he called her ugly? Made fun of her pantsuits? Called her fat or said that even Bill doesn’t want her? Low energy? Of course not, they’re friends.
“Balderdash! Me thinks your comment comes from low energy thought processes!”
Thank you for saving a reply myself!
If Trump were her stalking horse, would he have said she probably ought to go to jail?
Ben Carson would be good in Trumps cabinet so he should not make him into damaged goods.
There is not a stocking big enough for those clankles but maybe a horse stocking would work.
Frankly I don’t want Trump calling Hillary names. It would engender sympathy for her. Personally it appears to me you are holding the pom poms for Hillary. Didn’t I see you posting over on the Daily Beast?
“Why waste time on a person you may never even have to run against?”
And the corollary “why waste any time on a weak-minded Freeper!”
But you’re right about Trump’s strategy. While he does give Hitlary a glancing blow every so often, usually when the press comes up with yet another “potential crime,” he’s looking to secure the nomination And like you, I don’t think Hitlary is going to be the RAT nominee either.
Oh phoo.
He’s still digging out the contents of his can of whoop-ass. Be patient and let’s see what is in there. Railing too hard about Hillary (he has already indicated distinct disdain) ironically gives Hillary glory.
