The state of California is poised to award thousands of high school degrees to dropouts by passing a new law retroactively removing the requirement to pass a high school exit exam.
The California High School Exit Exam (CASHEE) was created in 2004, and is intended to make sure that students have a rudimentary grasp of English and mathematics before being awarded a high school diploma, and to counter the phenomenon of students receiving passing grades while learning almost nothing. The test is hardly complex. The math test, for instance, only covers 8th grade-level material and can be passed if students answer 55 percent of questions correctly. About 80 percent of California high schoolers take and pass it on their first try while in the 10th grade, and overall passage rates for the class of 2014 were above 97 percent.
But now, a bill passed Thursday by the California legislature, which Gov. Jerry Brown is expected to sign, suspends the exam through 2018, while also retroactively suspending it back to 2004. That means thousands of students who failed to ever pass the exam but otherwise completed all other requirements will now be able to receive diplomas.

High expectations?
These are good things

K-12 Day care.
Cali education rewarding failure.
Logical extension is that no one needs to go to school. They’ll still get a high school diploma. And since no one needs to attend school, there is no need for teachers, administrators, staff or elected school boards.
Then property taxes can be cut in half and tax collectors can find employment elsewhere.
Oh cool. They get a participation ribbon. /s
Your analysis/results are so profound that we should expand to College/University.
Lots and lots of money to be saved. And no more student debt.
They should all be given jobs too.
And new cars.
While they're at it, why require people to take tests for a driver's license?
Shouldn't they just give them away in the mail?

The lowest possible score on the SAT is a 600 so I guess they have that covered.
California invented ‘social promotion’ over 20 years ago. Grade school teachers have not been able to hold a child back, unless the parents signed authorization, since the 90’s. This is just the logical next step. And the Dems in California, and the USA, benefit from the lack of education of the masses.
which will be worthless once the word spreads to employers.

It’s been worthless for a long time, I believe most employers are aware of that. Just like college degrees in some (many) majors are worthless.
I hope you’re not implying that my degree in social engineering is somehow not going to get me far. /s
My question is what the heck are they doing for four years in high school if they havent done the above?............................. Texting the students behind them???
I was just thinking....I was in the military, didn’t do anything special, but if I moved to California maybe I could get a Congressional Medal of Honor.
You’d be amazed at how many don’t even bother going to school; in NJ they started threatening the welfare payments of the mothers if the children missed X number of days.
There is this big push to eliminate “the box” (asking about a criminal record) on job applications, in the hopes that more convicts can be hired. I personally find it much more useful to require an applicant to write a few sentences (about anything at all) to screen out those given “free diplomas” (usually preferred minorities). This is already happening with college degrees as well, by the way.
I don’t know if NJ requires parents’ approval to hold students back, but they’ve been “socially promoting” in NJ cities for decades. When I had to correct a co-worker’s lack of capitalizing street names, her response was to simply start typing everything in all caps; she had probably never read a book or newspaper, and was functionally illiterate. A shocking number of urban blacks are in the same boat, which has helped our non-English speaking invaders from the south take their jobs so easily.
And it’s no secret why. = :^)
