However, it is important to understand why Russia chose this moment to move, when it could have done so at any time.

With Mr. al-Assad now controlling only 17 per cent of the country, and fighting on an axis running from Damascus, Homs, Aleppo and Latakia (oddly enough the centres of Alawite and Christian populations), the fear is that without any discernible moderate opposition the groups best positioned to take advantage of an Assad collapse are IS the best organized and any number of splinter Islamist groups such as the al-Nusra Front. IS was not spawned by the Syrian civil war but took advantage of it, flowing in from Iraq. The thought of a clear victory by IS or some other Sunni Islamist group is unimaginable to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
For Mr. Putin, Islamist success in Syria will reverberate in his own backyard in Chechnya..

Often forgotten in the West is that the majority of Christians in Syria, the land of one of the oldest Patriarchates in Christendom (the Patriarchate of Antioch) founded by Peter and Paul in 34 AD before Peter founded the Holy See in Rome is resident in Damascus and has collegial relations with the Patriarchate of Moscow.
Mr. Putin, who portrays himself as the defender of the faith of Orthodox values, has a close alliance with the Moscow Patriarchate and its Eastern Orthodox interpretation of history.
Russia has, however, recently made statements to the effect that it is not tied personally to Mr. al-Assad, hinting that power-sharing or elections could occur a likely code to mean that Alawite and Christian minority rights would have to be respected and protected. Equally, any effort that abets the so-far anemic efforts to dismantle the Islamic State should be welcomed.

Because they know there’s a P*SSY in the White House and there’s not much time left TO GET AWAY WITH EVERYTHING!!!
A couple of generations ago the Russians went into Egypt and got active in the Aswan Dam project. They are smart cookies when it comes to gaining a foothold in strategic locations.
Yep! Exactly right.
We have James Earl Carter times 20, and we’re about the get another hawk in 17 months.
Russia will occupy the Middle East by then if at all possible.
You troll with the same posting in almost every foreign policy thread so I don’t know if you are a real person or like a bot.
A June article by Max Seddon of BuzzFeed reported the Kremlin was spending millions of dollars to pay English-speaking Russians to promote President Vladimir Putin and his policies in U.S. media like Fox News broadcasting and The Huffington Post and Politico news sites. Trolls are reportedly expected to manage multiple fake accounts and post on news articles 50 times a day, often with sentiments as simplistic as Putin makes Obama look stupid and weak!

They do this only in an attempt to win the trust of anti-Obama folks -- a clever/sneaky way to add credibility to their pro-Russia, pro-Putin BS.
Yet it seems to work on some of us! In reality, Obama is the best thing that has happened to Russia in a long time.

Wow, you went from zero to raving in no time. Do you accuse everyone of being a Russian spy? Is the author of this article a Russian spy also? Wow!
What you are doing / posting is actually the text book definition of trolling. Just FYI.
Just those that seem to post nothing but favorable things in regards to KGB Putin and his aims to expand Russian power and influence, in this case, in the Middle East. Other cases, eastern Europe. And it's not "spies", but rather pro-Putin trolls.
According to the Bible Damascus is obliterated. When? Good question.
Instead you spammed this article and trolled it because in your view this makes Russia look good somehow. I don't know if this makes Russia look good or not - that is debatable. But instead of debating you seemed to just argued.
Carter, I think, was more naive and simpleminded than anything else (typical Lib). Obama, on the other hand, is a willing accomplice who shares Russia's 'new world order' goals: weaker US, stronger Russia and China.
Careful NOOB, there is a contingent of Putinistas on the forum who keep pushing the claim that Russia is a Christian country out to save Christians. Reminding folks of Russia's Iranian sympathies-- among other things-- is useful.
I always thought that prophesy had to do with the past (it was already fulfilled when the Persians under Cyrus defeated the Assyrians) and allowed the Jews to return to their homeland. But now I am not so sure.
You said KGB - that mean spies.
The "KGB" went with Putin, as in the common nickname for him:
"KGB Putin".
In any case, I don't see you commenting on this article either. You don't want to address it's points for some reason but rather to accuse. Again, same tactic as ETL. Same person, different account?
Common to the conversation (or arguments) you have in your head.
I could say the same of you. You have all the makings of a vile Putinista, and one I've seen before before he got zotted. I will make short work of you if you push a Pro-Russian line. No need to attack people just for posting facts, so watch your "troll" attacks Noob.
