Walker: 'We shouldn't be taking more' Syrian refugees
The Hill ^ | September 10, 2015 | Mark Hensch

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker on Wednesday said he opposes the U.S. opening its borders to take in more refugees from Syria.

“No, we shouldn’t be taking on any more Syrian refugees right now,” he said at the Governor’s Small Business Summit in Eau Claire, Wis., according to Wisconsin Public Radio.

“In the last year, America has received almost 70,000 refugees, of which nearly 2,000 are from Syria,” the 2016 GOP presidential candidate said. “We’ve spent something like $4 billion in humanitarian relief in terms of helping the situation in Syria.”

“So, we’re doing more than any country in the world and it’s got to be clear that the problem that has to be addressed is not the refugee issue that’s a symptom, the real problem is this administration fails to deal with taking on ISIS,” added Walker.

His remarks come two days after he refused comment on the refugee crisis currently challenging Europe.

“I’m not president today and I can’t be president today,” he told ABC News on Monday when asked whether a potential Walker administration would address the issue.

“Everybody wants to talk about hypotheticals – there is no such thing as a hypothetical.”

Europe is currently facing a deluge of refugees from northern Africa and the Middle East displaced from violence in those regions.

Continental Europe is now struggling with the strain on its resources and space from hundreds of thousands of displaced citizens.

Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday said he supports increasing the cap on the number of refugees America resettles to help manage the issue.

Kerry proposed lifting the ceiling to over 70,000 refugees during remarks that afternoon.

“We are committed to increasing the number of refugees that we take and we are looking hard at the number we specifically can manage,” he told reporters.

Civilians are fleeing bloodshed in nations like Libya and Syria for greater safety elsewhere.

Syria is particularly hard hit by an ongoing civil war between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and rebel forces. The rise of ISIS further complicates the problems. Tags:

He'll change his mind tomorrow because Trump farted.

Then he'll change back. Then, he'll refrain from judge on the controversial issue.

Scott Walker: We’re ignoring the core problem

The Wisconsin governor and GOP candidate told reporters on Monday that talking about Syrian refugees addresses “the symptoms and now that the core problem is.”

“The core problem is the Obama-Clinton doctrine... that has empowered ISIS to take the territory they have in Iraq and continue to have the pretense they have in Syria,” he said from the campaign trail in New Hampshire. “We need to push back, and we need a president [that on] Day One is going to send a clear message by lifting the political restrictions on our military personnel and at the same time by terminating the Iran deal, which is a bad deal... Ceding power to Iran and that region only empowered ISIS and other forms of radical Islamic terrorism.”

Good call, politically and morally.

The only respect in which the USA owes any compassion to the people of the Middle East is for having been dumb enough to have elected Commander Xero, twice.

For that we are truly sorry.

Let the rich Muslim countries in that part of the world take their own.

While Saudi Arabia has lots of room, they are in a far more dicey situation than one might think. With Yemen falling to AQ and with that country being closer to Mecca than is Riyadh, unless you wish to see the whole Middle East and Islam destabilized globally, do not underestimate the peril of sending more ISIS plants to within their borders.

FYI, Trump came out on HANNITY saying the US has problems of its own and we can’t take in refugees, especially when we failed to take in the Christian refugees who were murdered.

I think Jeff Sessions must have dialed him up.

"Ceding power to Iran and that region only empowered ISIS and other forms of radical Islamic terrorism.”

How could anyone doubt he doesn't know what he's talking about?

Ceding power to Iran empowers ISIS...huh?

And, shouldn't he let us know if he is intent on using military force to stabilize Syria?

Walker is as dumb as GW Bush was falsely accused of being.

The Union Bosses, academics, "retired" government workers and Democrats who fled to Illinois would beg to differ.

ISIS needs to be killed off.

ISIS, Hezb'allah, AQ, Hamas, al Fatah, IRG, the Taliban...

There are probably 300 million radical Islamists in the world, with (I'm guessing) a half million here in the US.

Where to start and how? I don't have a complete answer, but I know where I would start and (as bad as they are) it isn't with ISIS.

"Ceding power to Iran and that region only empowered ISIS and other forms of radical Islamic terrorism.”

He could be referring to our withdrawal from Iraq as "ceding power to Iran" which would be correct insofar as the Shia southeast is concerned. It did destabilize Iraq and drive the Sunni tribes of Iraq including even formerly secular Baathist elements of the Iraqi army under the umbrella of ISIS.

So it depends upon how one interprets what Walker said as to how informed one might conclude he is.

So Walker is trying a do-over? Pathetic. He should instead quit.

That was his second take or thereabouts. He seemed to try and want to say it wasn’t something he could talk about until he was president. Something about hypotheticals. There are hypotheticals and there are hypotheticals. This one, as he has found, he needs to answer. I don’t like his latest answer by the way. Unfortunately Bush II and Obama created this mess and as we don’t seem to be able to fix it, we need to help with the results. Instead of here, why not resettle in the region? Maybe train and arm them to return and kill every member and supporter of Islam (oops, Islamic terrorism, kind of same thing)

Good for Gov Walker. We don’t need to poison our homeland with even more Islam.
