The Obama administration wants to increase the number of refugees it resettles in the United States above its current ceiling of 70,000, and it is committed to taking in more Syrians in particular, officials said Wednesday.
Secretary of State John Kerry met with the senators from the Judiciary subcommittee on immigration and No. 2 Senate Democrat Dick Durbin of Illinois on Wednesday morning regarding the millions of displaced Syrians and told reporters that President Barack Obama and his team are studying options. A senior State Department official confirmed afterward that the secretary had proposed increasing the overall number of refugees allowed in the U.S., but had received mixed reactions from lawmakers.
But neither the official nor Kerry would specify what numbers were under consideration, even as countries like Germany and Austria prepare to take in hundreds of thousands of refugees.
“We are committed to increasing the number of refugees that we take. And we are looking hard at a number that we can specifically manage with respect to the crisis in Syria and Europe,” Kerry said. “That’s being vetted fully right now and I think at the appropriate time we’ll have a better sense of what exactly that number will be.”
