Trump's mentor: Military school is like the real thing
politico.com ^ | Daniel Strauss

"Well, he was at a military school, five years. That's just like being in the army believe me," Trump's mentor during his days at the academy, Colonel Theodore Dobias, told POLITICO. "That's six o'clock in the morning, 10:30 at night. Five days of school. From 8 till 3:30 ... Study at 7:30, taps at 10:30. And believe me that's the way it was. There was 400 kids and that's what we did."

*snip*

But Dobias, who is now 89 and fought in World War II in the Army for the 10th Mountain Division, heaped praise on Trump, who he coached in baseball at the academy. He said Trump, who came in as an eighth grader, was a "very fine baseball player" and a "B+" level student. Now, Dobias said, Trump is the most promising candidate in the 2016 field.

Let’s get real. Do we really want to believe that Trump got “more training militarily than a lot of the guys that go into the military” when he was at a prep school?

Does our faith in the Donald really demean our valuation of the military that much?

And don’t give me any nonsense about how we know more about the Donald’s schooling than we do about Obama’s. It is simply not relevant.

He must have made much better grades at Fordham, otherwise there is no way he could have transfer to Wharton.

It's not like he was a minority.

On another thread about this issue a couple of ex vets that had also attended military school said Trump was right about it being just like the military.

You play the same games, true, but you are not real military and you do not live under the UCMJ. Unless you convert your time in a military school into a comission, it doesn’t count any more than any other college.

I went to a military school for 3 years and graduated. It’s exactly how the Colonel describes. The school I went to specialized in a 2-year Sr ROTC Early commissioning program. So yes, it prepared you in EVERY way for the military.

My classmate and best friend enlisted in the Army after graduation and said that boot camp was a joke compared to military school.

No matter how hard you train it never equals combat.

You have to know that Trump would totally agree with you but that was not what he was talking about.

He reportedly contended that his experience at the military-themed boarding school gave him “more training militarily than a lot of the guys that go into the military.”
That sounds about right to me. I was in the Boy Scouts in the Sixties and early Seventies. I know that if I had been in military school 24/7 at that age, with a retired General as Superintendent, it would have been far more intense than my Air Force Basic training at the age of 21 where I only even fired a rifle one time.

Five years of military discipline from the age of fourteen through his High School graduation versus six weeks of simply orientation, cannot even be compared. In Air Force Basic the guys with prior military school were given two stripes half way through training. Our military knows the value of that formative schooling.

No, training does not equal combat.
But neither does “just” being in the military.
Jimmy Carter, until Obama the worst president ever,
illustrates that the military is a cross-section of society, not a bastion of Dudley Do-rights.

You may be correct I can only speak from experience. I enlisted in 1965, did two tours in VN, Army, I think that I might have a different opinion,

You were a warrior in the real war and I am in awe of your sacrifice for the rest of US. My lottery number was 215 and I went in with only two months left of the Vietnam era. You know, I was Air Force where generally those that go to war are officers and we enlisted guys worked back at the base. That may have made a difference too.

In six years in service I never had any tear gas training or had any mine field training. In Basic we had one class about the Code of Conduct, one class about the UCMJ, one class about how to recognize rank, one class about first aid, one class about bearing and behavior, etc. We marched together, but we had absolutely no combat or fighting training at all.

Think back to when you completed Basic Training. How prepared do you think you were for the rest of your military experience?

When Trump said “more training militarily than a lot of the guys that go into the military”, I noted that he didn't say most guys or half the guys, he just said a lot of guys.
