The United States on Tuesday moved to head off preparations for a suspected Russian military buildup in Syria as Bulgaria agreed to an appeal from the Obama administration to shut its airspace to Russian transport planes. The planes destination was the Syrian port city of Latakia.
The administration has also asked Greece to close its airspace to the Russian flights, Greek and American officials said, but Greece has not publicly responded to the request.
Over the weekend, two giant Russian Condor transport planes ferried more supplies and equipment from an air base in southern Russia across Iran and Iraq to Latakia, according to an American official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the official was discussing intelligence reports.
A Russian troop transport plane, probably an Ilyushin model, also landed at the same airfield in Latakia over the weekend. That aircraft, which flew over Greece and Bulgaria, is believed to have carried Russian military personnel.
Theyre clearly establishing some sort of forward operating base, the American official said.
There have also been unconfirmed sightings of Russian Spetsnaz special forces at the Syrian Naval Academy, officials said.

HA!
Obama will charm them into submission......
Hey @$$HAT!
You’ve lost ALL of your leverage because you’re a wimp!!!
Obama, demonstrating weakness since January 20, 2009.
He has the most incoherent polices of any regime anywhere in the last two centuries.
I guess the good news is that this means there are still Syrian Christians left to kill. This administration’s job isn’t finished.
If I was Greece and the US approached me to shut down airspace to the Russians....I’d say fine...$250,000 an hour...how many hours do you want me to keep it shut down.
Since this is not a threat against NATO...there’s no cause for Greece to play along.
More fall out from our great leader’s leading from behind.
Remember all those new friends Obama promised us?
Who know it would be the Muslim Brotherhood and al Qaeda.
As bad as I thought he would be, that wasn’t something I saw coming.
I respectfully disagree. Obama's foreign policies have been focused and well executed. The destruction of American power abroad has been Obama's number one goal and he has been wildly successful.
Making Syria safe for ISIS.
I’m going to take a wild guess and say the plane and the troops are to evacuate Assad, his assets, friends and families.
Russia in Syria would that be good they can fight ISIS??
WE are so totally in left field on this. WE need to step aside and let it all go to hell over there. We have no good options at this point, other than to not deploy one single solitary soldier there.

I agree, please, don’t let a single precious US soldier end up in harm’s way because of the worthless Obama. :-(
Obama is ALWAYS taking the wrong side in everything.... God help us!
my understanding is that Russia is backing Assad against IsIs and the clown in Washington is backing IsIs.
Go Putin!
This is one of the rare times when I am glad that Obama is a weak sissy. Russia serving their own interests is much better for America than Obama serving his destructive agenda.
While I am a self described hawk, I agree. We can’t police every hell hole in the world, especially those we don’t have a clear good guy to support. I say let it burn itself out and let the Russians waste resources trying to herd those cats.
Can anyone tell me what Obama or the US is doing in Syria? Seriously, is there a plan?
The Russians are supporting Assad. He’s a tyrant, for sure, but at least he protects his Christian allies, He’s against ISIS, and doesn’t produce jihadi snuff videos.
And who does Obama support?
A better option would be to support Assad in defeating the rebels and Isis.
Greece said today that they WILL NOT stop Russian over-flights.
I will ask the question no one in the mainstream media dares to ask, lest they immediately find themselves without a job.
WHY is this administration doing everything it can to NOT fight ISIS???
