For those of us who work in business (like Trump), this is normal procedure! I’ve gotten myself out of lots of trouble and have resolved numerous problems by keeping all backup!
When I worked in the Civil Service, my boss told me that I should make a "memo to the files" comment in the desk calendar page, as to any phone call or incident above the normal B/S.
He said that at least you have some kind of paper trail for the courts or higher ups instead of just a "He said, she said" scenario. It worked for me one time - as soon as I showed up with the calendar, the issue was "resolved" (i.e. dropped like a rock).
