Donald Trump Wanted To Make Charlie Rangel HUD Secretary In 1999

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said in November 1999 that, if elected president, he wanted to make Charles Rangel, the Democratic Congressman from New York, the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

At the time, real estate magnate was considering running for president as a member of the Reform Party. Asked by CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer if he’d “given some thought to a potential Trump Cabinet,” Trump mentioned Rangel as his top choice to lead HUD.

“Well, let’s go — like HUD,” Trump said. “I think Charlie Rangel is a terrific guy. He’s a congressman from New York. He has been a powerful guy. Now the Democrats are not in power, but I think he’d be terrific at HUD.”

Rangel has been a member of the House since 1971 and is still in office. His website touts his record promoting affordable housing in New York’s 13th Congressional District.

Other Trump Cabinet picks would have included Colin Powell as secretary of state and General Electric CEO Jack Welch as treasury secretary. Trump said that John McCain would be “a very interesting candidate” for secretary of defense.

In the interview, Trump also predicted that, if he won the Reform Party’s nomination, he would “take more votes away from the Democrats” than the Republicans in the general election. He ended up withdrawing from the race in February 2000.

The Republican party has ineffectual leadership in congress who pander to the media and do nothing except get along. The media portrays Republican leadership going after the conservative wing of their party. Trump comes along and doesn’t care if the media is friendly. Goes after his enemies. Rush been saying for years media is not our friend and I agree. Boner n Mitch are pissing the win in the election away. Trump might be the devil but he acts like a leader and Republicans really need a leader. I’ll ride it out through the primary and if Trump wins well I’m trying the devil I don’t know cause the Democratic party is going where I don’t want to be.

Walker took office Jan 2011 by June 2011 instate tuition for illegals was revoked (only gov and state ever to do this).

I'm not trying to criticize you but you are making the same mistake that Jeb is making.

The polling data released earlier this week(on Rachel Maddow) showed that 65% of Trump supporters don't think that Obama is a Christian or a US citizen.

I watched the video and his words seem so rehearsed it's hard to tell if he is actually in favor of deporting them. The illegal asks him "Will you deport us?" And he replies quickly, "No," blah blah blah, then reiterates about following the law, which would seem to contradict the "no." But then a journalist asks "Are you going to deport families?" to which he replies, "No, that's not what I said."

As far as I can tell, it is extraordinarily hard to know what he even said, which is pretty normal with Walker, actually.

Putting Rangel in that position would be BRILLIANT. There are only a handful of people with enough credibility in The Hood to be able to carry out Trump’s plan to clean up our cities, and Rangel is (or at least was) one of them.
