Caltrans Proposes Wildlife Overpass On 101 Freeway
By MARTHA GROVES Mountain lions, bobcats and other wildlife would have less chance of becoming roadkill if the state adopts a plan to build a landscaped bridge over the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills, supporters of the proposal said Wednesday.
State agencies, elected officials and wildlife advocates urged the state to provide the much-needed link in an area where rampant development and highways have fragmented once-continuous habitat. The 165-foot-wide, 200-foot-long overpass near Liberty Canyon Road would connect the Santa Monica Mountains on the south with the Simi Hills and Santa Susana Mountains.
The 'sad but not surprising death' of a wandering puma known as P-32 Large carnivores in particular have found the 101 to be a formidable barrier. Since National Park Service biologists began researching mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains in 2002, motorists have struck and killed a dozen of the big cats in the study area, including a male puma hit on the 101 near Liberty Canyon two years ago.

When they built the A2 highway in Poland from Warsaw to Berlin, the EU required them to build wildlife overpasses. They also installed wildlife cameras that were operated by motion detectors to capture photographs of the furry critters that used the multi-million dollar overpasses.
In over 5 years they did not capture a single photograph of an animal using the expensive overpass.
Obviously, some state worker saw the photo of one of these in Belgium that has been making its way around the internet.
It would be a lot cheaper if we just hired El Chapo’s people to dig a tunnel.
Wild life lives matter
Probably not their idea. They’d rather not waste taxpayer money on that kind of goofy thing.
Caltrans is forced to go through a lengthy “environmental review” process with projects large and not so large. This process involves the participation of “stakeholders” who unfortunately include loony enviro-kook groups.
I am in California, and this is so typical.
Don’t want them mountain lions ending up like Cecil the Cross-eyed Lion.
No sh*t. It’s the South 101 where this idiotic wildlife overpass is being considered. Did they mean the freaks and fags from santa Monica as ‘wildlife”?
good one...lol
Who is going to operate the school for mountain lions to teach them how to read the signs directing them to the overpasses?
Speculation by some locals is that if the deer are smart enough to find it, the mountain lions will be too.
And the only guaranteed stupid animals are the idiots that funded it.
Go Cailfornia
yours too good one, hahaha
Wait, Agoura? There’s undeveloped land north of 101 in Agoura? Guess I haven’t been there in too long to remember accurately.
the cross-eyed lion, lol /// you three guys are as witty as i am lol
Establishing a high ground for predatory cats.
What could possibly go wrong?
CROSS-EYED LION ,,,,,,,, I’m still laughing about this, lol...i gotta get outa this thread..later flyer
Start issuing tickets to mountain lions that refuse to use the overpasses. That’ll learn ‘em! ;)
Maybe they should include a lap pool in the overpass for fish and so avid swimmers could commute to work.

I used to live there. Cal Trans is notorious for taking a project that would take six months anywhere else and stringing it out for five years of union dues. I suspect they see wildlife overpasses as a new profit center.
