For more than a century, the tallest mountain on the continent was named after the 25th U.S. president, William McKinley.
Now, in honor of Alaska's indigenous Athabascan people, who had always called it "Denali," President Barack Obama is changing it back, the White House said in a release Sunday.

I’m surprised it’s not going to be Kilimanjaro to make Zero feel more at home.

why should O care about McKinley? just another dead white European-American male.... and a Republican too!!!!
(and a dirty rotten imperialist for ‘winning’ the Spanish-American war?)
maybe we should submit a few suggested name changes of our own to the One in our WH....
anything named after communists or Kenyans or Islamics ?
or even... MLK, JFK, ?
oh I got one he will change for sure...

“This is the work of a tyrant. Newspeak is their word for it.”
Alaska has called it Denali for years and wants others to call it Denali.
A few dudes from Ohio want to call it McKinley.
Naming it McKinley was a political stunt. If the only people that object are these few dudes in Ohio, I can go with Denali.

Alaska has been trying since 1975 to get the feds to call it Denali.

The local paper has no problem with it.

It just pisses me off that when he wakes up in the morning he can say "I think I'll rename a Mountain today"

Just to be clear, doesn’t Sarah Palin support it being renamed to Denali?

Come to think of it, the store I work at is just beginning to carry North Face.
I'm surprised there was no huge controversy over the ice cream bar, "Eskimo Pie." I would joke back at the PC Crowd, "they are made from real, live Eskimoes." B-)

The Board of Geographic Names hasn’t acted because there has always been a controversy in Congress, i.e., the Ohio delegation opposes the change.
A law dating back to the 1940s gives the secretary of the interior the authority to make the change if the Board of Georgaphic names doesn’t respond to a request for a name change in a timely manner. She said today that she thought no decision in 40 years was not acting in a timely manner.

You have nothing to fear here. You are among like warp minded patriot terrorists...: )

The Spanish settlers in FLA called it Canaveral. Some politicians in DC tried to rename it, locals resisted.
