American-Israeli actress implies Holocaust not any more horrific than other genocides around the world.
It's time for the Jewish community to shift focus away from the Holocaust, American-Israeli actress Natalie Portman opined Friday, stating that such focus has detracted from atrocities committed around the world.
I think a really big question the Jewish community needs to ask itself, is how much at the forefront we put Holocaust education," Portman stated in an interview with the British Independent. "Which is, of course, an important question to remember and to respect, but not over other things."
Portman revealed that her views stemmed from her learning about the Rwandan Genocide.
"I was shocked that that [genocide] was going on while I was in school," she said. "We were learning only about the Holocaust and it was never mentioned and it was happening while I was in school."
"That is exactly the type of problem with the way its taught," she continued. "I think it needs to be taught, and I cant speak for everyone because this was my personal education."
We need to be reminded that hatred exists at all times and reminds us to be empathetic to other people that have experienced hatred also," Portman urged. "Not used as a paranoid way of thinking that we are victims."
"Sometimes it can be subverted to fear-mongering and like Another Holocaust is going to happen," she added.
Portman was born in Jerusalem; her family emigrated to the US when she was three years-old, where she would later attend American Jewish schools.

True. I meant in the West.

I may as well repost for others my response to an mail I got. It follows:
I am Jewish. I grew up saturated in Holocaust Holocaust Holocaust. Years and years of Hebrew school, they talked more about the Holocaust than about anything else. More than learning Hebrew, more than the Old Testament, more even than God himself.
Years of going to synagogue, hearing more Holocaust Holocaust Holocaust, Sabbath after Sabbath.
We get it already. How many more times must we be compelled to listen to yet another retelling of information we all know so well that any of us could write a book on it?
Judaism is about a whole lot more than the Holocaust. The only Jews who arent completely sick and tired of hearing it already are ones flogging it for dollars as a career.
When I was in Warsaw recently I visited the Museum of The History of Polish Jews.
What was refreshing about it, it that it is NOT about the Holocaust, but the life Jews had in Poland before.
Of course there are plenty of museums and commemorations in Poland for the Shoah, but it’s great to see the Poland, and Europe can finally see that there was a rich culture there, and what a tragedy it truly was that it was wiped out forever.
Once you start taking an eraser to history, there’s no telling where you’ll stop. 1984
Ever notice that Hillary sometimes looks to be drugged?
If the resolve to prevent further Holocausts leads us to fight people who are fighting against those who would do a Holocaust on us, then forget it. I am talking about warring on the Serbs and Kosovo as they tried to rid themselves of Islam.
Natalie Portman is Jewish and was born in Israel.
Don’t “Uncle Tom” her.
Thank you for sharing your perspective. It helps.
This is what the Ivy league schools do to a persons thinking.Damn shame.
Speak for yourself. There is a huge amount of historical work still to be done. Using my grandmother’s Polish passport, I was able to uncover an unknown conspiracy of foreign consuls in Toulouse that enabled my family members and hundreds of others to escape to Portugal. My mother’s father’s family came originally from Rzeszow, the same town Natalie Portman’s Herschlag family came from. Very few survived from Rzeszow.
If Ms. Portman were advocating putting HaShem, the Torah, and Sinai in the center of Jewish life rather than Holocause memorialization, I would say more power to her. However, I sincerely doubt this is the case. This may be the foreshadowing of a coming Leftist reversal on the Holocaust just as they reversed on Israel long ago (not as long in the United States).
Thanks a lot gator!
No. I've noticed she always looks drugged (or drunk).
Slavery is not unusual in Haiti, either ... of blacks by blacks.
My point, such as it is, is that Moslems are generally (Haiti being an exception) behind contemporary instances of violent Jew-hatred and of slavery.
Someday, you will be thankful for this service I have done.
There’s a Jewish museum in Amsterdam that is devoted largely to pre-war Jewish life and culture as well.
