Speak for yourself. There is a huge amount of historical work still to be done. Using my grandmother’s Polish passport, I was able to uncover an unknown conspiracy of foreign consuls in Toulouse that enabled my family members and hundreds of others to escape to Portugal. My mother’s father’s family came originally from Rzeszow, the same town Natalie Portman’s Herschlag family came from. Very few survived from Rzeszow.
And in the meantime, actual Judaism is being forgotten.
More Jews know the names Auschwitz and Dachau than Rachel and Leah.
More can tell you the number killed in the Holocaust than the number of laws God commanded of us in the Bible.
More can tell you the details of the construction of gas chambers than the construction of sukkah.
There is great value in historical investigation and education, but a monomaniacal focus of such intensity that it usurps the Jewish identity is unhealthy.
