SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Walking into Mexico at the nation's busiest border crossing with the United States is no longer an uninterrupted stroll for foreigners.
Starting late Wednesday, pedestrians going to Tijuana from San Diego at the San Ysidro crossing must choose between a line for Mexicans who get waved through, and a line for foreigners who must show a passport, fill out a form and - if staying more than a week - pay 322 pesos, or roughly $20, for a six-month permit.
About a dozen foreigners stood in line Wednesday night, directed by English-speaking agents to six inspection booths where they got passports stamped. It took about 10 minutes from start to finish.
Travelers have long followed similar protocol at Mexican airports, but the new border procedure marks a big change at land crossings that weren't designed to question everyone. Pedestrians and motorists have generally entered Mexico unencumbered along the 1,954-mile border with the United States.
"This is about putting our house in order," said Rodulfo Figueroa, Mexico's top immigration official in Baja California state, which includes Tijuana.
The changes, which have been in the works for years, come as Donald Trump has surged to the top of the Republican field in the U.S. presidential race. He has insisted that Mexico sends criminals to the U.S. and pledges to build a border wall at Mexico's expense.

Good for the goose...

Espero que le guste a usted la sopa.
Hopefully, it will discourage Americans from visiting the crime ridden cesspools along the border.
When it comes to a border, the Mexicans, unlike the dumbass gringos to the north, don’t fool around. They are a sovereign country and they want to keep it that way. They see the bull**** that going on in the U.S. and they don’t want that kind of BS going on in their country.
So, don’t drop the sopa.
Los gustos como el pollo ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .
I wouldn’t pay five cents to go to that failed Narco state chithole.

Racists. Huge own goal for Team Mexico here. Trump will slap a border security fee on Mexico so fast they won’t know what hit them.
A concept which is totally foreign to his large neighbor to the north.
Some years ago, I entered Saudi Arabia from Bahrain, about a 20 minute drive/20 minute wait at customs/20 minutes to destination hotel for about a $100 taxi ride.
The company travel department told me the alternative was a direct flight into Saudi Arabia where you had about a four hour wait in line to get through customs.
I noticed our flight into Bahrain, and others arriving about the same time, was mostly business people taking same the taxi route. Every one of us (with the exception of GCC Nationals and British Commonwealth Nationals) paid $30 for a Bahrain entry visa.
Wonderful racket for the locals! They were good natured about it and took payment in any foreign currency or credit card. But it had to be a major source of income for a tiny country getting $30 per head per day from about 2/3rds of all disembarking passengers at their 24 hour airport.
This type of reactionary policy will cripple the local (Mexican) economy.
My guess is Mexican officials huddled with Obama (again) to make Trump look bad. They’ll paint this as the start of a war and Congress will start pleading with Americans to stop Trump.

Isn’t that racist? Not all Americans can get an id, much less a passport.
You can apply for a passport at any US post office........................
It still costs nearly a hundred dollars or we’d require one to vote.
It’s been only six years that one needs a passport to travel to and from Canada and Mexico.
