I come from a world outside of politics, where track records and accomplishments count.
Those were the words of Carly Fiorina, a Republican candidate for president, earlier this year. Readers of the business pages know her as the former chief executive of Hewlett-Packard.
For much of this early campaign season, in the crowded field of Republican candidates, Mrs. Fiorina didnt look as if she had much of a chance at the White House. But recently, in the afterglow of her impressive performance in the first Republican debate, Mrs. Fiorina has begun to make significant gains in the polls that have made her a more formidable candidate. She has attracted attention for her sharply articulated pro-market policies and broadsides against both Hillary Rodham Clinton and Donald J. Trump.
And so it is curious to those of us who have reported on her business career that there has not been a greater focus in recent days on her track records and accomplishments, as she suggested she should be measured by.
What Carly Fiorina Would Need to Do to Win Even more striking, Mrs. Fiorina, the only former female chief executive among the candidates, continues to promote her business experience on the trail, yet she was fired by Hewlett-Packard after the companys stock dropped by half in 2005. She has long blamed her failings at running the technology giant on the bursting of the dot-com bubble and deepening recession in Silicon Valley after Sept. 11 attacks.
In an essay published late last week, Fiorina also said she lost her job because of her maverick management style. When you lead and when you challenge the status quo, you make enemies, she wrote in the essay published on CNNs website. Its why Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Walt Disney and Mike Bloomberg have all been fired.

I was in CA when she ran here. her record is actually horrible.
Her platform should include free inkjet ink for all.
although i think sorkin leans left, hard to argue with his analysis here. HPQ was not in better shape when fiorina left than when she started. that’s the bottom line. also, i don’t think it DQ’s her
“Carly Fiorinas Business Record: Not So Sterling”
Well I’m pretty F’n sure that when Carly Fiorina left HP U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone S. Woods and Glen Doherty were all still alive — So, two female candidates running for president, who do you trust with the lives of Americans?
And of course, Fiorina is equal to each of those people. /s
Ah, neither...
Sigh. I will say it again. The stock dropped based on analysts' buy/sell/hold recommendations. The same analysts she basically told their opinions and "quarterly expectations" were irrelevant to the success of the company.
The golden boys/girls of Wall Street who get paid enormous salaries for having good track records for predicting company performance are the ones declaring if meeting their expectations are important or not.
she seems like an establishment version of corporate ceo the establishment can put on a leash.
“yet she was fired by Hewlett-Packard after the companys stock dropped by half in 2005. She has long blamed her failings at running the technology giant on the bursting of the dot-com bubble and deepening recession in Silicon Valley after Sept. 11 attacks. “
Horse crap....the dot com bubble was many years earlier. She screwed the company up, and demoralized the executives. Now this DOES “trickle down!
Fiorina was PAID to leave HP. 42 million was how badly they wanted her out.
I know her track record at HP wasn’t great but her worst days at HP were still a hundred times better than Hillary’s best days at the State Department.
“I know her track record at HP wasnt great but her worst days at HP were still a hundred times better than Hillarys best days at the State Department.”
Amen to that!!!
I wish the New York Times would show as much incredulity when the Obama administration touts its economic accomplishments.
.
Sorry about that — I was implying that if the election came down just Carly or Hillary...
Don’t be sorry. Not trying to give you a hard time.
Since when is business acumen a necessity for a POTUS?
Judging from the last two elections, there are no standards or expectations or demonstrated skills required.
HA! Says the NYTimes, which has been steadily declining in value and influence since coming out as a mouthpiece of leftism.
I am a Cruz guy myself, but I am trying to get FReepers' heads around the fact they are letting a group of people with an agenda taint their choice for President.
If she were the nominee it would be a thousand times worse than what they did to Romney.
Every former HP employee who was ever laid-off, lost their health coverage, or had anything else bad happen on her watch would be in Democrat TV ads whining 24/7.
They might even remind viewers how much they hated the expensive little ink cartridges on her printers.
